The effects of magic on everyday modern life, the temptations it brings, how people would react to this, the scientific this inspires, plus an overall entertaining drama. Science and Sorcery has all of that. I can highly recommend it.
There are lots of stories where a victim gains the strength to stop being victimized. Most of the time it's the birth of a hero and the beginning of grand adventures.
But cast your mind back to when you were a child; did you think about the future? Did you dream grand dreams of heroism and accomplishment? Or did you just want to get through another day of pain and loneliness?
Power can create heroes. It can also create villains. This is the story of a boy who had every reason to believe that he had nowhere to go, no-one to turn to, and the only way out was down. And the story of the people who could have been his friends if he'd known them before he gave up. And the thing he unleashed because he thought he had no other way to change his world. And how they all stopped it.
When the review screen asked me for the mood of the book, I was torn. I selected Dark, but almost went with Hopeful. So how about a dark but hopeful mood? Much of the time I anticipated where things were headed, but there were enough times that I was surprised that it kept the book interesting and exciting. I had trouble putting this book down and will definitely buy the next book in the series, if there is one. If not, it is a good standalone novel.
While the characters don't make some of the best decisions, they were completely mundane without even the slightest bit of contact with the mysticism that does occur within our society. In the end, they did the best they could with the limits imposed upon them by their outlook and society's restrictions. Unfortunately, that leads to one helluva mess before it all gets cleaned up.
I went into the book expecting a light not too terribly realistic scenario and ended up enjoying the hours of reading it provided. I recommend it for a good light read.
