Product description

Review

The book provides an intriguing overview of some of the most daring concepts in 21st century physics and its building blocks written by a man who clearly knows his stuff. --Engineering and Technology

From the Inside Flap

Thorne shares his experiences working as the science adviser on the film and then moves on to the science itself. In chapters on wormholes, black holes, interstellar travel, and much more, Thorne s scientific insights many of them triggered during the actual scripting and shooting of Interstellar describe the physical laws that govern our universe and the truly astounding phenomena that those laws make possible.

Extremely interesting read. A lot of the detail is high level theoretical and astro-physics so to get the most out of it, it'll probably be more helpful if you are at least strongly inquisitive within these topics. I myself have no "academic" background in these areas so found a lot of it confusing but still an excellent read and something to really get your claws into if, like me, the film left you wanting more.

It explains the background of the movie, chapter by chapter - and what was going through the mid of Kip during his work on interstellar. It is also exquisitely illustrated. with both photographs and diagrams to explain the theories being explored. It includes explanations of many of the complicated theories behind the movie and how they used science to make it as accurate as possible. There's also a bit of talk at the end about the whole "bookecase tesseract" scene which is actually extremely interesting - bridging the gap between what we do and do not know.

In summary, a really good read for anyone left wanting more after the movie.

Great book to feed my physics hobby and love of the film. Would recommend to anyone that wants to delve a little deeper into the science behind the movie but feels intimidated by academic research, Kip Thorne has written it in such a lovely way that is easy to follow.

Having seen the film just last night, I was pleased to find this book on the science of "Interstellar" at my door today. The movie is very entertaining, and it left me curious to find out more about some of the scientific aspects. The movie was marketed as being based on "real science" - after watching the film, it's clear that it is not that simple. Some of the film (particularly the latter part of it) hinges on theories that have not been proven by any means; nor have they been disproven, so in some sense the film may be accurate to what some of our "best guesses" are when it comes to current science.

Kip Thorne, whose work on theoretical physics is featured in the film, authors this book. He elaborates on the science seen in the movie, and aims to increase the audience's understanding of the theories within. It's a well-written text that does a good job explaining things to an average reader. He includes a number of charts, diagrams, and illustrations which definitely helped me to understand some of the more difficult concepts.

I look forward to seeing the film again after having read this book; I think it will certainly allow my appreciation for the movie to grow.

Some examples of what is discussed in the book:
- The physical laws of our universe
- The physics of wormholes and black holes
- Gravity & time dilation
- Details of the spacecraft Endurance
- Blight, food/oxygen shortage on Earth
- The equations on the chalkboard
- much more, including spoilers.

This book could just as easily be called 'A very short introduction to Quantum, Classical, And Relativistic Physics'

It is accessible, reasoned and a joy to read and digest.

Thank you Kip Thorne for making what con often be difficult both accessible and comprehensible.

A must read.

I love the movie and have the novalization of the movie and the screenplay of the movie on my Kindle. I got all 3 paperback books and the Blue Ray yesterday as an early birthday present from my wife and in-laws. The books are amazing and this specific book gives great easy reading and the explination of the science behind the theories and the scenes in space in the movie especially the physics and theory of Gargantua and the Black Hole

The only problem I had is with the delivery, it was next day which was amazing but the packaging wasn't that great. The 3 books and the Blue Ray came in one big box which could've been packaged better as 2 corners on this book were folded and creased, the rest was fine ( yes I'm that pernickety about certain books being in perfect condition ). Other than that this boom is worth the price for anyone who is interested in the movie and the facts and physics behind the space part of the movie. Highly recommend !

When you go to see a film, you’re often left wondering why there is such a huge production list at the films conclusion from the actors to the set designers, from eh SFX through to the lighting and this book from Titan goes to show exactly why the list is so long as it takes a hell of a lot of people to make something that not only wows your imagination but also leaves you with the possibilities of what could be.

Whilst the book is partly concept art, the bits that I really love is how they put it together, from the music that adds another level to your appreciation through to the actors who make you believe and of course from the hundreds of people that help pull it altogether for your viewing pleasure, even though, at times, you won’t even know what they did.

All round a cracking book and one that really added to the whole experience and is one that whilst it’s still my book, has been half-hitched by my twin to help present a number of things to his art classes. Magic.
