I made a wonderful hair balm from reading the information in this book. I am 49 years old and if you have been through everything in the hair shop (like I have) and you still can't find that one product suitable for your hair read this book. It will give you many ideas on how to create something that it suited to your hair. Have a look at the natural oils and butters that are good for the type of hair you have. My hair is greying and relaxed but I decided to let it grow for a while. I wasn't sure if I wanted longer grey hair, but it's condition is so good, that I started getting wonderful complements from other women. For me this book was a great investment, gone are the bad hair days. Thank you Adurey, your work is one of kind.

This book is great if you are looking to really take care of your hair and allowed it to grow to it's full potential. It's true that initially the books starts off a bit slow as it discusses in full detail the 'science' behind your hair, however, once you get into the core of the book the information is a lot more easily digestible and you can relate it to everyday jargon. I have learned some great tips on how to manage my hair - everything from which products to use (great list of products that you can review yourself before purchase) to how to prepare my hair at bedtime. I have learned that certain products that I have used in the past such as shampoos etc were actually harmful to my type of hair (that's another thing you learn - your hair type). I have been following these tips for about 4 weeks now and I can tell immediately that it's a lot better and healthier for me than the way I was treating my hair before. This book makes you realise that your hair should be treated with more respect and that as a result it will thank you by being longer and healthier.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is serious about looking after their crown and glory!

A Forerunner of more to come?

This book is pricey but thankfully did not disappoint in its clear science-based explanation of black hair and it's unique characteristics and needs. Where I found it less motivating to continue reading was in it's not so fantastic readability. I felt at times I was ploughing through a study session in a science text book (which is understandable perhaps, given the author's scientific background).

For this reason I felt it is (and have ended up using it as) more of a reference manual. Maybe it's not geared up for reading from cover to cover. There's lots of great informative sections in it, from a no-nonsense standpoint often lacking in other black hair books. I certainly hope it's a trend set to continue in bringing more qualified, factual and useful info to a hungry audience. From this standpoint it makes an excellent forerunner for more books of this ilk to come.

Personally I'd really like to see more images of women, showing case-studies of different hair types and issues. It'd make for more interesting reading at the very least. Also the section on hair colouring - for me - was lacking more useful product examples info and guidance for things such as the least damaging / best options for things like grey coverage. Hair porosity solutions and scalp conditions.

I see this author has a new book out which may address some of these things - but I haven't checked that one out yet.

Overall, a good buy; no one book has it all; this one does cover the 'science-bit' fairly well.

Not Found to be Useful if Dealing with Traction Alopecia

Always start with a consultant dermatologist dermatologists diagnosis and recommendations. If you have end stage traction alopecia this book will be of little use to help you resolve shedding or ignite hair growth. This kind of book is somewhat 'smoke and mirrors', that said, it might be useful for people who are not suffering from specific hair issues and have a relatively full head of hair. Maybe useful if you have hair type that is not entirely sub-Saharan African.

This book is a gem. The only book you need to learn to care for your natural or relaxed hair. The books is easy to read, has tones of information on caring for black hair and how to rescue a severely damaged hair. I bought this book after several attempts to rescue my hair. MY hair has been severely damaged after relaxers had been applied improperly and for lack of proper care. For years I have been buying books on afro hair, and none of the advices helped at all. I tried hair salon treatments but once I was by myself the day to day care was just not helpful. But this book changed the picture. I have been on the program this book recommends for two weeks and my hair looks fabulous again. I was using my hair on a ponytail because was so embarrassed about it and it looked horrible but yesterday I went out with my hair down with beautiful curls!!!!!
Thank you for writing such a wonderful book on black hair care. This the only book you will ever need to learn to care for your hair.
