About the Author
Patrick J. Jones is an award winning sci-fi and fantasy artist and teacher. His work is collected and published worldwide and his client list includes companies such as Disney, Lucasfilm and Roc books. Patrick grew up in Belfast, Ireland, during the worst of the 'troubles';. Influenced by artists Boris Vallejo and Frank Frazetta, he spent long days in the sanctuary of rooftops, drawing and dreaming of becoming a fantasy artist, to the din of street riots below. After two years in the merchant navy he moved to London and spent 15 years as an illustrator before travelling the world once more. In 2008 Patrick attended the first IlluXCon event in the US as a guest artist alongside his boyhood art hero, Boris Vallejo. Today Patrick lives in Australia with his loving wife, Cathy, and two fluffy dogs, and is currently being filmed alongside some of the world's great fantasy artists for Bill Niemeyer's movie Art of the Fantastic: A Journey into Creation.
Born in Lima, Peru, Boris Vallejo immigrated to the United States as a young man, with just $80 in his pocket. Before long his incredible oil paintings appeared on the covers of magazines such as Eerie, Creepy, and The Savage Sword of Conan, thus inspiring a new generation of young artists. Since then he has produced decades worth of fantasy art and is admired the world over as one of the all-time greats of the genre. Boris is married to renowned artist Julie Bell, who paints alongside him in their Pennsylvanian studio.

Collected within are 13 step-by-step tutorials that look at Patrick's painting process from start to finish. The book focuses on fantasy characters. Anyway, the techniques taught are applicable as long as you're drawing figurative forms.
The importance of foundation knowledge of figure drawing is laid out in the first few chapters. After which the detailed tutorials follow.
Each tutorial features one amazing painting where there are several photos of the painting in progress, and each step is accompanied by the materials and techniques he used. Patrick would zoom in on specific areas of the paintings and talk about them in greater detail regarding the painting process and the ideas behind.
The painting he used as examples are from commissioned jobs as well as his personal works. Some of them are huge. It would have been great to see them at the actual size. The reproduction shown in the book is quite detailed but I felt that overall, many are slightly darker, but perhaps they are really like that in real life just that I haven't the opportunity to see them.
The last section of the book has a few pages of art gallery, tips on photographing models and artwork. He also shows us his palette and let us peek at his studio.
This book's incredibly informative and a terrific resource for any sci-fi & fantasy oil painter to learn from. There are lots of useful tips shared, not just from himself but from artists he has learned from. It's also very inspiring to read about his career, inspiration and how he got into painting. Considering the affordability of the book, this is definitely value for money.

Well with this in mind I went to the best for inspiration and found this wonderful book.
In the last few days I have read it cover to cover and i totally in awe of not only the wonderful completed paintings (and the very good quality of the photographs ) but by the way that Patrick J. Jones explains not only his methods but also his mindset when working on a painting from the very early planning stages right through to completion.
Through this book he has not only introduced me to a world of Fantasy art but also inspired me to become a fantasy artist myself.
I highly recommend this book and even though I have been painting for about ten years myself and found some of his methods similar to mine, there is still so much more I have to learn from a master fantasy artist such has he.
I've only read snippets of the text , but Jones style is clear and informative and it's not often an artist goes into this much detail about their techniques.
