my hair - caucasian, natural colour dark but not black. bottom half - used to dye it black but stopped a year ago, the upper half kept dyeing it brown. roots dark with 30% greys. never bleached! wash it every day.
in one sentence - it is a fantastic hair dye, I could sing its praises 24/7, highly recommend
end colour will depend on your base colour. this particular colour is recommended for light blondes to dark blondes. i have found through trial and error that if i apply a proper reddish auburn dye to my dark hair, it always makes it dark brown almost black, so to get a reddish auburn colour i had to pick a proper red, as the end result is still always a few shades darker than the red on the box.
I wanted a medium dark red auburn colour with delicate pinkish undertones, as i really hate orange or copper. i did not bleach my hair because from watching you tube videos of girls dyeing their hair various shades of red, I concluded that often when you bleach your hair before putting on a red dye, your colour will then fade fairly quickly leaving it looking orangeish.
so i decided not to bleach but just dye it the way it was, and after the first time it did become dark reddish/auburn. obviously due to the different dyes I'd had before i applied red, the botom half of my hair is still somewaht darker than the upper bit but with each dyeing it becomes more red auburn so it is taking in the redness.
I wash my hair everyday so always use permanent colours. i dye it at home and when i apply this dye on my hair i keep it on for about 70 minutes. that is enough as every time i keep it on for longer, it makes my hair really dry but in terms of the colour, it does not make any difference.
always used to use black dyes and this red is definitely more durable. it does come off and the colour changes, but it does not fade, it just becomes a different type of red, but it is still vibrant after 4 weeks, which was NEVER the case with any of the black dyes i used.
my guess is that it does not fade so easily because my hair had not been bleached. so the only reason why i dye it again after 4-5 weeks is because i get greyish roots, otherwise i feel i could easily dye it every 6-7 weeks because of the colour still being vibrant.
I think now I have dyed it about 8 times and it looks redder with each application.
because my hair is naturally dark - the resultant colour is not a proper red but kinda auburn/reddish brownish with a hint of pinkness (not orange or copper) so you really need to be realistic as to what you can reasonably expect. i think if my natural hair was medium brown or dark blond the result would be much more red, almost like whats on the box, but then i did not want 100% red, as i wanted it to look reasonably natural.
but the way it is, it is red enough for me to stand out, but at te same time, weirdly, it somehow manages to look natural(ish), not a plastic toy red, suitable for teenagers, but sexy red/auburn that a grown up can be happy with. I can see a lot of people staring at my hair, men and women, and I get a lot of compliments from random people. my mom has become so fond of the colour that she wants to start using it as well.
schwartzkopf - don't even think of discontinuing it or improving the 'recipe'. it's fantastic the way it is, don't mess it up in any way!! please.
