Solistes - Chœur de garçons de Varsovie - Chœur & Orchestre Philharmonique de Varsovie - Direction Antoni Wit

Review

Antoni Wit is a profoundly idiomatic Schumann conductor, presenting his credentials in a superb account of the overture, and bringing the same dramatic sweep to all the choral numbers that follow. **** --The Guardian,18/02/11

Characterful solo performances, formidable choral singing and refined orchestral playing help make this Faust an unbeatable bargain.the deal is sealed by excellent recorded soundand an essential online German libretto and English translation. **** --Classic fm Magazine,Apr'11

Wit sets the pace with a wonderfully idiomatic overture and continues with a performance of character and intensity, illuminated by the Warsaw Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra. **** --Financial Times,09/04/11

I have known about this work for thirty years but only now, with this purchase, heard it. I love Schumann's music, especially the piano works, and this cantata does not disappoint in that the passion, the rhythms, the invention of the best piano pieces can be found in this work for voices, choirs and orchestra. I listened from start to finish, following the libretto donwloaded from the Naxos web site for free, and was gripped from the opening overture to the final chorus.
I cannot understand why this work is not performed as regularly as so many other choral works by Handel, Elgar and Berlioz (for example)
This performance is very fine. All the soloists have good, strong, voices - the men in particular, thought the ladies do a fine job. The choirs do their job well. The orchestra pays splendidly under Wit.
The recoridng seems to be perfect. I could easily imagine that I was in a fine concert hall in a good seat.
Well done Naxos for giving us a gem at little more than thtn the cost of a car parking space for a typical concert in Liverpool where I live.
I shall listen to this work again, in this recording. Thirty years of curiousity has now been satisfied and well satisfied.
