Matthew Rose, star of Covent Garden, Glyndebourne, the MET and La Scala sings Schubert's masterpiece Winterreise

"Rose sings with a beautiful, velvety tone but with full understanding of the importance of the words." Musical Criticism

Review

Schubert's song cycle about a traveller who walks through a frozen landscape is, despite flashes of joy, burdened by despair. Written at the end of the composer's short life, it contains some of his most poignant songs: Gute Nacht, Der Lindenbaum, Der Leiermann. Written for tenor voice, often sung by a baritone, it acquires literally added depth in this beautiful reading by the Grammy-winning British bass Matthew Rose, who sings it mostly a fourth lower than its original key. Schubert himself called them "terrifying" songs and confessed to his own emotional exhaustion at having written them. Rose and Matthewman, (are) in full, expressive form. --Observer, 10/0/13

…like Hans Hotter, Matthew Rose leaves one with a sense of a vast burden of suffering determinedly endured against appalling odds. GRAMOPHONE RECORDING OF THE MONTH --Gramophone, Apr'13

This Winterreise is beautifully put together in every way; interpretation, recording, liner notes(and) artwork. *** --BBC Music Magazine, awards issue'13

There are a lot of Winterreise recordings available. What sets this one apart from all the others is the sheer beauty of Rose's voice and the sensuality of Matthewman's playing. There are so many delights on this disc: daringly-new tempi choices; a superb, dramatic arc throughout the cycle - in short a brave, insightful new (really new) take on this wonderful piece. I've seen Rose on the opera stage, but to hear him as a Lieder singer is simply a revelation. The voice is always full, but never bombastic - sometimes tender, without weakening. Matthewman, sometimes supporting and sometimes leading, plays with an complete understanding not only of the music, but also of the poetry.

This is one of the most impressive renditions of Winterreise that I've ever heard. It is beautifully packaged (hardback-booklet style) with a couple of wonderful essays, and full English translation of the text. The disc also has the sheet music imbedded in it as computer files. To anyone who wants to hear their first Winterreise, I say - BUY THIS DISC. To those who have already heard a dozen Winterreise recordings, I say the same. You will not be disappointed.

A man is travelling along a road, but we're not quite sure whether this is a real or an imagined journey. The feeling of snow and ice is palpable, though the hallucinatory passages of Schubert's Winterreise tell us otherwise. Generating tension between these tangible and intangible states is part and parcel of delivering the cycle's full emotional bite. On this new beautifully-packaged recording for Stone Records, Matthew Rose and Gary Matthewman give us a lot of introspection, if underplaying the bitter abuses of winter that prompt the turn inwards and make the crisis worse.

Rose's natural treacly tone provides a welcome relief from the braying histrionics of the tenor Winterreise. Creating a rich if unknowing premonition of Wotan in Die Walküre, a bass performance of this cycle is, by nature, a very different beast. Matthewman responds with a rich but effortless accompaniment. His intelligent flashes of rhetoric bring out the motivic detail within Schubert's accompaniment.

But what starts off angry - thankfully resisting operatic excess - soon turns inward. Schubert clearly intended there to be a thematic link between 'Erstarrung' and 'Der Lindenbaum', but rather than highlighting the emotional disparity between those songs (one real, one illusory) Matthewman delivers them in the same breath. Far from an outward bound Winterreise, this begins to feel like a very interior monologue.

Outward show and inner confusion is one of the main dialectics at play here, though that tension isn't as apparent as it might be. Rose's vocal velvet prompts too many slow choices of tempo, impeding the cycle's onward trudge and its consequent delirium.
