I picked up a couple of the other Schubert cycle CDs by Jonathan Nott and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra in a charity shop (aka thrift shop) recently. I am recent convert to Schubert and I am finding my way round his symphonies. I nearly did not buy the CDs in the charity shop due to the slightly home-made graphic design of the cover. It suggested a degree of amateurism which made me wonder if the playing and sound engineering might be of a similar hue. It was just as well that I decided to take a chance. They were gems as is this CD which I bought from Amazon because the other two were so good.

In the UK, Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft (DGG) is the only record label from the German speaking world that you generally hear about in the classical music sphere. I have never heard of Tudor up till now. I have heard of the Bamberg but only as a historical curiosity. Prague had a long established German orchestra but at the end of the Second World War ethnic Germans were out of favour in Czechoslovakia and what was left of the orchestra relocated to Bamberg in Bavaria.

Anyway throw away any prejudices. This record is not produced by DGG and the orchestra is not the Berlin Phil or the Vienna Phil but it is still first rate in terms of playing and production. The disc is an SACD/CD. It can be played as either. I only have CD playback so I cannot comment on the SACD reproduction what I can say is that as a CD the sound quality is excellent.

In terms of the conducting and playing style this cycle was undertaken in the mid 2000s.
