HASH(0x97e6f834) out of 5 stars A couple truly great recordings....some discographical details 14 Dec. 2011
By Octave - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
I had a dreadful time finding conclusive discographical details on this disc _anywhere_ online; so now that I've purchased a copy, I'll leave these details here, to alleviate any confusion.

1. (1-5) Piano Quintet In A Major 'The Trout', D667: Clifford Curzon w/members of Vienna Oktett (rec. Nov 1957)
2. (6-8) Arpeggione Sonata In A Minor, D821: Mstislav Rostropovich (cello) & Benjamin Britten (p) - (rec. July 1968)
3. (1-4) Fantasy In C Major, D934: Szymon Goldberg (v) & Radu Lupu (p) - (rec. August 1979)
4. (5-10) Octet In F Major, D803: Vienna Oktett (rec. March 1957)

I'm not sure that I can say much about the performances that hasn't already been said; a budding lover of Schubert could not possibly do better than to acquire this (especially before it vanishes from print!), though I think there are other editions containing either this "Trout" or this Octet. I wanted both of these performances, and this was a convenient and cheap (through Amazon Marketplace) way to get them. My interest in these 1957 stereo revisitations of these key pieces by the Vienna Oktett was spurred by comments made by musician, producer, and Amazon reviewer Peter Watchorn, in a review of a different edition (containing this "Trout" and "Death and the Maiden"). He wrote:
"The Schubert Octet, the second version recorded by Willi Boskovsky's original Vienna Octet, is one of the great recordings of the octet, surpassed only by the ensemble's earlier mono recording (where more repeats were observed). It is full of life, and was a truly ground-breaking release back in 1957....The Vienna Octet's stereo re-makes of the Beethoven Septet, Schubert Octet and Schubert Trout Quintet are all among the greatest chamber music recordings made by Decca in the late 1950s."
(His full review can be found on this product page: Trout Quintet / Death & The Maiden
though I think the same recording can be had cheaper in another edition: Schubert: Trout/Death & the Maiden Curzon & Vienna Octet)
The other pieces are top-notch "filler"; actually, I was thrilled to collect another major piece featuring Radu Lupu, whose solo Schubert was in many ways (along with the time-honored Kempff solo piano box set) my way into Schubert's world. This "Fantasy" was not included in the recent box set collection of Lupu's Decca solo recordings, which I guess I would still recommend with unqualified (take that word however you will) enthusiasm to anyone new to the Schubert universe. This is the collection I mean:

HASH(0x986340fc) out of 5 stars excellent 1 Sept. 2015
By Jon Miller ('Kirk') - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The Curzon Trout is one of the best-elegant and joyous while not overtly fussy. I still prefer Serkin/Sony for the inimitable, slightly
sharp ping in Serkin's tone plus its balance between wildness/impulsiveness and sophistication. The Rostropovich/Brittten Arpeggione sonata is excellent with no reservations, as is the late and wild
Fantasy D 934. Although the Vienna version of the Octet is quite lovely, the Academy Chamber Ensemble/Philips version
remains my favorite, sounding quite similar to a the Capitol EMI lp of the Octet ca. 1960 (by the Berlin PO Octet), think that it has still not been
transferred to CD, but would love to hear it again)
