Product description

Product Description

This selection of songs could carry the subtitle Women in Love. LEducation sentimentale, perhaps. Ailish Tynan and Iain Burnside have assembled a portrait gallery: a whole bevy of Schuberts women pursuing different sorts of love, nurturing different Biedermeier dreams. Goethes Gretchen finds an intriguing counterpart in Schiller's Amalia. Ellen gazes out over Loch Katrine, while Serafina looks down affectionately at her fortepiano. A young nun welcomes her destiny as the bride of Christ. This, the first volume in Burnsides carefully crafted voyage of Schubert song, sees Ailish at the height of her career in music that has been her life's dream to record.

So still and calm and beautiful. Absolutely excellent start I think, they work together so well. A nice duel Celtic take on Schubert. A good recording, I liked the balance, there s a sort of intimacy but you re never too close. Well produced. --BBC Radio 3 Record Review

Franz Schubert's life lasted only thirty-one years, but just like Mozart before him, his output is immense. The latter excelled in all musical genres, but Schubert's genius was most evident in his chamber and instrumental works and particularly his songs, of which he composed over six hundred. This very special collection could carry the subtitle 'Women in Love', as many of the songs portray the gentler sex pursuing love of all sorts. Indeed, by the mature old age of seventeen,Schubert had already painted in music a rich variety of female characters such as Schiller's Amalia, Scott's Eilen, Schubart's Serafina, and the Old Testament's Hagar, his first completed essay in the form. Apart from the latter, all the others listed above find their place in this magnificent collation, which also includes a young nun welcoming her destiny as the bride of Christ.

Schubert was a master of the 'lieder', and his effortlessness in drawing together disparate elements: a unifying visual metaphor at the keyboard, a sense of the voice's capacity to carry emotion, an inspired approach to word setting and a structure so strong and clear, leaves you with a sense of wonder, time and again.

This first issue in Iain Burnside's meticulously crafted foray of Schubert song is nothing short of captivating, with delight after delight following each other in quick succession, and his support of Ailish Tynan's interpretations, which are full of sensibility, ardour and vocal nuance, is insightful and sensitively gentle.

If you are not familiar with this genre of Schubert's output, this CD is an excellent point of departure to get more acquainted with a dream world of innumerable riches that touch the heart and intoxicate the senses, and should set you on a journey of never ending surprises. This is a highly auspicious start to a Schubertian project that promises to be as scholarly and informative as any available at present. Sound and presentation are of the usual high standards we have come to associate with this ever growing label of excellence. --Music & Vision
