What zombies are to contemporary Hollywood, counter-tenors are to Amazonia: a plaque. The latter phenomenon is particularly mystifying. Is it a flight from masculinity? Does it represent a deep-set desire to undergo emasculation and then take to the stage Farinelli-wise to the acclaim of the queenly audience? Surely Showtunes Central cannot be far away - la, la, la, la - la, la , la, la - hey, can someone sing me a ditty from `Seven Brides for Seven Brothers'! Short of myxomatosis, little can be done to staunch this craze. Mark my words: the day is coming when counter-tenors will rule the streets like the Undead and appear in movies with Tom Cruise as a protagonist.

Now, a recent comment that the great American soprano Arleen Auger was a wobbler, intonation-wise, sent me scurrying back to this Hyperion disc. I originally had most of the series but penury compelled me to sell off most of them. At the time, there was one reason why this Volume `Schubert and the Theatre' was saved from the chop-shop: Auger's performance of Thekla (D 595) - the ghost from the balcony. It is the most exquisite singing you will hear this side of Elysium. Confined to the upper realms of her tessitura, Auger delivers the text in sotto voce. It must take phenomenal technique to sustain the line in such a fashion but sustain it she does. It is the very definition of ethereality. Could one suggest that some poor bugger in tight underpants would struggle to replicate this feat? Mmmmh - maybe!

Like Kathleen Battle - another wobbler in the ears of some - she tackles Liebe schwarmt auf allen Wegen - a gem of a song. However creamy her voice was, Auger was more of a coloratura soprano than lyric: the additional torque shows. Catwoman is by no means eclipsed but both accounts offer immense pleasure.

Of the discs in the Hyperion Schubert, this is perhaps the one I return to most often. Arleen Auger's singing is extraordinarily beautiful and goes utterly to the heart of the songs here. Search Youtube for her transcendent "Der Vollmond Strahlt". Listen. Listen again. Then buy the disc.

I have just recently bought this recording after. I'm so glad I did. It is wonderful, absolutely lovely singing- I hadn't actually heard of Arleen Auger before, but she is wonderful- the choice of songs if beautiful and the choice of lieder is just perfect. The disc culminates in 'Shepherd on the Rock,' which I didn't realize before was Schubert's last song. The whole CD is wonderful and has made me wonder why I ever listen to anything but Schubert lieder!!
