Review

'The urgency is raw and immediate, occasionally hard-driven in an acoustic suggesting confined spaces and close interactions; the result is undeniably exciting.' --Gramophone, November 2013

'This quartet is not an easy work to project [String Quartet No. 1]...but the Fred Sherry Quartet, led by no less a violinist than Leila Josefowicz, has its measure.' --The Strad, Februrary 2014

The Transfigured night is a classic. I got the CD for the first quartet. It is the same idiom as Transfigured Night. Gustav Mahler was a fan and recommended it to Richard Strauss who also liked it. I found it a very charming piece. The Canons were entirely new to me and are nice simple pieces. Do not be put off by the atonal/serialist side of Schoenberg: that was a few years off and he was still firmly in the late romantic mold here. The performance is good.

I can only say the despite Schoenbergs reputation for being a difficult listen, I didn't find that to be the case here. Well recorded, and beautifully played by The Fred Sherry String Quartet I found it a very pleasing and satisfying listen. Yes it required concentration but repaid that with pleasure. The Transfigured Night was glorious. The reviews title says it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars An apex of his Art Nouveau... 20 July 2014
By Onesimus - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
*****

For enthusiasts of the string quartet genre, Schönberg's canon of five offers a tremendous bounty in terms of style and idea; moreover, for those whose mind inclines towards historical dialectic, it's immensely gratifying that each of Schönberg's quartets perfectly corresponds with the periodization of his artistic career.

In this vein, the d-minor Quartet is an apex of his Art Nouveau first period (A.D. 1900-08).

Cover art by Félix Vallotton.

Earnestly endorsed.
