The Scars of Jorn Redclaw Kindle Edition
They say some stories are written in blood. But, sooner or later, it’s the scars that hold the truth.
No one knows this better than Jorn Redclaw, a man who made his name fighting beside the legendary Wolfeater. His scarred flesh is all the proof needed of a life lived… and the price paid.
But when you find yourself sitting beside a campfire in the middle of a winter’s night, what else is there to do but relive the glorious past?
From the jagged cut to his brow, suffered when swimming the Adalvas, to the ruined remains of his leg, earned in a brutal fight with the monstrous Old Bear, Jorn will share his stories with the lucky few he calls his friends.
But has he forgotten the only truth that counts? That some wounds never heal.

Not only is it just a collection of awesome stories, it properly fits alongside the Wolfeater book itself - from cameos of characters, right up until that end. I now want to re-read Wolfeater to see how each little story really did impact the characters and places.
Set in Old Valor, the same place where Wolfeater takes place, it was like greeting an old friend. It primarily revolves around tales told around a campfire - stories of the scars littered across Jorn Redclaw’s body, the titular character.
Jorn and the Wolfeater first met when Radok (aka the Wolfeater) washed up on their shores as a child. They’ve been together pretty much every since - after Jorn was one of the first to stand for him, even naming themselves brothers.
The stories show how fiercely loyal these characters are - not just to each other, but to their Grey Crow tribe. It also highlights how fiercely they have to fight to survive in the freezing wilderness where they (and countless other tribes) live.
I enjoyed all of the stories and would happily read hundreds of them. I probably enjoyed The Broken Tooth the least, and enjoyed The First Song or the Old Bear the most, but I genuinely liked them all. I loved how seamlessly each story fit into the talking at the fire in the present day.
Descriptions of battle were, as to be expected, phenomenal, and Anthony Mitchell has a fantastic author voice and way with words. He has great skill in showing the grit and determination needed to survive, the hints of magic with the Seven and the Eighth, and those who listen to them/speak for them.
My only real critique/minor negative point is the repetition of “stones” - and whether someone has them, or if they’re hairy enough, or made of enough steel. Probably 15 or so mentions too many for my personal taste, but it’s a very minor thing!
All in all another spectacular return to Old Valor and the world of the Wolfeater. I will 100% be reading any and all books set here as I adore these characters. They really are what the legendary stories (and subsequent myths) are made from.
