A fun story from a small town in another time

If Gustave Flaubert had written about a funnier village ala Doc Martin and with bawdiness of Tom Jones you would have the feeling of Clochemerle. It is not even remotely on par with Madam Bovary but it is fun to read, but written by a man who fought in WWI and wrote it in 1934 in the shadow of the rise of fascism and rearmament in Germany.

In the early 70's PBS showed a BBC production of this book. The series starred Peter Ustinov as the mayor of Clochemerle. For years I have searched DVD's and websites for a mention of Clochemerle - at last I found it! Although the film version is apparently not available other than in the BBC archives, the book is a delightful trip down TV memory lane. I laugh all over again over the antics of the villagers in this lovely French wine producing village. If you love good satire, this is for you.
A wonderfully naughty story

Clochmerle tells the story of French village during a time of some disorder. The characters are beautifully drawn and will be familiar in type to all readers. The translation is smooth and works well. Anyone who enjoys people watching and a good laugh should be delighted with this book.

If there's a more delightful read than Clochemerle, I've yet to find it. A classic!

A book I have enjoyed since I was in military service many years ago. Very well written, very funny and yet serious. It is one of the books I have most enjoyed for many years and to have it in Kindle form is brilliant
