Product Description

Review

'More complex, more shocking, more fascinating by far than the story the church and media made up. The truth usually is.' --Catherine Deveney Scotland on Sunday

'Since the Biblical story of Susanna and the Elders, the matter of an attractive woman being bullied by a cabal of male religious leaders is one of the most persistent themes throughout history. Helen Percy's book is a modern version of an old song. Read it and weep.' --Richard Holloway

'. . . an astonishing story and told without self-pity and even with a glimmer of humour. Remarkable.' --Brian Morton

This was an excellent well written book by Helen Percy - At the time, I never quite understood what she was going through and all the church politics from top to bottom. Im glad she has been able to put the record straight by giving her account of what happened. The Church of Scotland did not come out well in this book nor did the press. Some people should hang their heads in shame. I thoroughly recommend this book. - Paul Leslie

Scandalous, Immoral, Improper - that's an apt description of how the Church and the gutter press treated Helen Percy!

It is also a weak description of a much more personal history where Helen was horrifically tortured physically and emotionally as a child by a beloved authority figure, and which subsequently led to her being completely unable to defend her boundaries as an adult woman.

The innocent need to believe that the world is normally a fair place is the reason why Helen could not bend to the will of her oppressors within the Church.

In this book which eloquently recounts her experiences without self-pity and with humour, she allows us to see who she really is. Helen has lain bare her soul in search of peace, and in the process is raising funds to help support the many women and child rape victims she worked with in South Africa.

I hope this book not only succeeds in setting the record straight for those people whose only source of information has been from newspapers trying to make a profit from a 'juicy story', but is instrumental in effecting change within the Church and society as a whole.

We need more brave voices like Helen's.

This is a book that truly spans the rich tapestry of human experience : there is hope, betrayal, disappointment, laughter, tears. In literary quality it ranks amongst the best.
It is long overdue that the truth was heard about the scandal that rocked the corridors of establishment and hit the news headlines with scurrilous allegation. It will cause all of us to think carefully before blindly swallowing what we are served by the media and the press!
Helen writes in a style that is very frank and accessible; always with humour, never with self-pity.
I laughed, I cried. And I felt enriched for having read it. It has my highest recommendation.

Having Just read Helen's book and the terrible injustices she has sufferred at the hands of the Church of Scotland. What a closed and secret and powerful and wicked organisation they appear to be. Even the courts have bottled it by apparently stating that it is the Board of the National Mission's responsibility as they appointed her and that the Presbytery although responsible for this miscarrige of justice. are in fact an agent of God. They can circumnavigate various modern day laws such as HRAand Sex Discrimination Acts as it was at the time, to ensure their precious Church of Scotland Act (1921)remains Sacrosanct.
This book goes far beyond the hurt felt by Helen Percy but exposes a very secretive organisation who look after their own. Where is the spiritual and moral guidance you expect from the Church

The sad thing is, Helens story is not unique. Shame they didnt deal with another minister in the same way they treated Helen. This one has committed adultery but has just been reappointed to another Parish. Its definatley a case of who you know and not what you know. After the Helen Percy debacle you would have thought the Church of Scotland would have changed for the better, but sadly not.

A great read and thorougly recommended if you want to know more about the internal workings of the church.

I'm a minister in the Church of Scotland. I recognise the instituional 'old boys network' in Helen's book having fallen foul of it myself. I was ordained in 1997 as all this was unfolding and I only wish I had the knowledge and the courage to give her the support she needed. I read this in one sitting and by the end I was weeping with the disgrace and injustice of it all. I would administer communion to her anytime!
