Review

"The pair’s eagerness drips from every page and it would be a hard-hearted reader who left Scaling Up Excellence anything less than thoroughly energised about the potential for positive change... Very good indeed." (Robert Jeffery Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development)

"Practical and spiced with entertaining case studies. They do not shy away, either, from pointing out that it may sometimes make sense to stay small." (Financial Times)

"Explains how a brilliant idea or plan developed by a few people can be effectively adopted by the whole workforce." (Director)

Three of the greatest separate but related challenges that all business leaders face are achieving excellence, then scaling it up and sustaining profitable growth. In this book, as co-authors Robert Sutton and Huggy Rao explain, they became intrigued by what they characterize as "The Problem of More": How to scale or scale up from "pockets" of excellence to more people at more levels and in more areas throughout the given enterprise, whatever its size and nature may be.

They discuss these "pockets" as if they were "silos," functioning - in this instance functioning very well - in virtual isolation.

The strategy of scaling "fixed our focus on developing ideas that are grounded in great research, can help people spread and preserve excellence, and will grab and hold their attention. The chapters in Scaling Up Excellence spell out these lessons." One is that the similarities among scaling challenges are more important than the differences. This means that what scales up successfully on one organization can, with only minor modification, probably succeed in anther.

Also, scaling involves more than the Problem of More. Replication of excellence in Pocket A to Areas B, C, D, and E is insufficient. Meanwhile, there must also be improvement in all areas, what Pixar director Brad Bird characterizes as "relentless restlessness," to sustain what I would characterize as "kaizen on steroids." Sutton and Rao also learned that "people who are adept at scaling excellence talk and act as if they are knee-deep in manageable mess...The best leaders and scaling teams muddle through - and even revel in - these inevitable moments and months of messiness.

This is a great book about implementing performance excellence at work. It describes and offers great examples why many performance excellence practices fail and why some succeed. There are some really good insights and tips for sustaining performance at work and advice around pitfalls to avoid. If you are interested in improving productivity and performance at work then I highly recommend this book to you. I only gave it 4 stars as there are lots of misprints and letters missing in the text - ironic that the book is about 'excellence' too.

A good read. Plenty of structure. Insights that will help with a small project as well as a large one. I recently read the Effortless Experience; this book adds depth to the observations in that book

I found that this book was well structured and written with a broad audience in mind. It is book that emphasizes the need to consider scaling as a key component of developing businesses from a start up to maturity. Sutton and Rao draw on their extensive research and first hand experience in a way which helps to get the message across and endow the reader with a new approach. To my mind there was a great deal of anecdotal reflection, some people may like this but I personally like some examples rather a lot. It is certainly an enjoyable read and I got what I was looking for out of this book - the answers to a lot of questions.
