bought from amazon when it was massively discounted
ours arrived superbly wrapped in thick blue plastic & securely taped up with "amazon" packing tape.
Have been really surprised how well the "super resistant" cars have dealt with the bruising treatment they have had. within minutes of us having the set up & running i was certain it was all going to end in tears. Two weeks later & approx 30hrs of racing ALL six cars are still working fine despite taking serious knocks & crashes. though this may well be due to us starting out with the car power levels set too 50% & now running the cars at 75% power.
value for money:
is worth researching for yourself how much the items in this set would cost you if purchased seperatly
6x super resistant cars , 6x digital chips
1x c7042 six car powerbase + 6x throttle controls
2x straight lane changer track sections
i stopped at this point because it had already exceeded by far the price of the set.
durability: crashes / flying off the track at the corners . running into the back of other cars while racing is inevitable & so far theese "super resistant" cars seem to be holding up well . expect to loose the odd rear wing-spoiler / wing mirror / front grill.
Of course theese cars are not "unbreakable" so smashing into the skirting boards at full speed or repeatedly ramming stopped / crashed cars at full speed/power will bust them.
the c7042 powerbase, not reliably registering/recording the laps of all cars. This is a "known bug/fault in the firmware/software that ships with this device & after lots of research i have been unable to find a fix for it from scalextric/hornby. (though there is 3rd party downloadable software available that fixes this bug for "serious-pro racers" lol grandad gets annoyed when its his car that is not getting its laps recognised.
would have hoped for the "top of the range" set that this is , they would have included alternate track plans~track layouts. we had to adapt it to fit our floor space .. 9ft x 9ft was no good for us. Our usable/allowable floor area (blushes bright red & cringes) is 12ft x 5ft & i now know this is non negotiable lol .
thankfully the slotcar / scalextric community saved my bacon with a pc download which allowed me to make the most of the track & space we have.
is a shame such a well known large company as scalextric/hornby , has so little information / help / customer support & faqs / problem fixes / explanatory literature either with their products or online.
The ability to run the cars on lower power settings particulary for younger children who struggle to get to grips with the throttle controls.
The amount of help / information / instructions / Q&A / Faqs / uploaded video / general support , that is available from a "Huge" variety of scalextric users / clubs / enthusiasts / 3rd party developers.
Overall: Best purchase my family made this xmas , has provided fun for three generations ,from 65 to 7 years old.
P.S if you have the space to expand on this set . consider the hairpin curve expansion pack & i highly recommend the R3 & R4 curved track for adding some variety to the corners / shape of the track layout.
