It's Hallowe'en night when Bobbie is hanging out with her friends (although for some the term friend is used loosely) at her posh boarding school, Piper's Hall. Teenagers like to scare each other, especially on All Hallows' Eve, and before Bobbie realises it they have moved on from the lame ghost stories they were telling onto a much scarier subject: Bloody Mary.

Everyone has heard the age-old tale that if you say her name five times in front of a mirror that she will come for you, but there is very little evidence that those who have completed the task have actually disappeared. That is, one of the girls reveals, because the story originated at their school. So the only people who will be taken by the ghost are those who chant her name into a mirror at Piper's Hall itself.

Bobbie obviously doesn't believe the story, but before she knows it she, her best friend Naya and local boy Caine are roped into a dare to say Mary's name five times in front of the bathroom mirror. While they don't notice anything different straight away, sinister things soon start happening to them and they discover that they have only five days left from the moment they said her name until she will come for them and they will disappear, one by one...

Just like James Dawson's previous novel Cruel Summer, his new one very much reminded me of the Point Horror novels I devoured as a kid - except better and creepier. Especially Say Her Name was TOTALLY creepy. And like an idiot I couldn't stop reading it once I had started so I ended up finishing the novel just before going to bed. Needless to say that wasn't the cleverest idea I've ever had.

Besides the proper scare-factor, what I also really loved was that it was impossible to predict how it would end.

No one knows who Bloody Mary is or how she met her fate, but everyone agrees that anyone who summons her disappears shortly afterwards. Unfortunately, Bobbie and her best friend Naya don’t believe in ghosts so when the queen of their school’s mean girls, Grace, dares them to repeat Bloody Mary’s name five times in a mirror, they’re not afraid. Bobbie takes the dare because Grace’s crush, Caine, wants to do it and she’s attracted to him, while Naya wants to wind Grace up.

Nobody expects the legend to actually be real.

But it’s not long before spooky and inexplicable things begin to happen – faces in mirrors and the never-ending drip drip drip of water nearby. When other girls who claim to have summoned Bloody Mary start to disappear, Bobbie and Naya realise that Bloody Mary is very real and they have five days before she claims them too. Somehow they have to find a way to stop her, but that isn’t easy because Bloody Mary is determined to take them …

James Dawson’s standalone horror novel is a well-paced story that handles its twists and shocks well but can’t quite escape its derivative roots – particularly the resemblance to Ringu. Bobbie is relatively well drawn, emotionally and physically distanced from her self-involved actress mother, her friendship with Naya (who, as a character, is a little too self-consciously cool) is believable and I enjoyed how the girls support each other without being sentimental, but the romance with Caine was predictable and a little dull. Dawson smacks out some zinger lines, his dialogue snaps and he really captures the bitchiness that can go on between teenage schoolgirls while the action is well paced and he knows how to draw out tension and make the most of his shocks.

This is a really scary read and very much has left me terrified of the gigantic mirrors in my living room. I recently had James into school to do an event for the book and several of the kids who bought books have been to tell me the same thing. Not one to read at night time. Or alone. Or in a room with mirrors!

It is no secret that I am huge James Dawson fan. His books appeal to the teenage book geek in me and I wish I'd had them to read when I was 15. I love his wit and the way he writes his characters. I love how his books keep me guessing. While I'm not especially a horror fan I picked this up because Jame wrote it and very glad that I did because all the elements I love about his books were there and as a consequence I'll happily read anything he writes in the future no matter what the genre

If you love 90s teen horror films like I know what you did last summer and point horror you will adore these but be warned this is scarier by far.

I'm into YA dystopia novels usually, like thg and divergent. I wanted to try this because I don't usually read horror, and it was amazing. It really gave me the chills - my eyes were racing down the page to see what happened next. The book was so unpredictable - I thought I'd worked it out but I was wrong! It also has romance, which I really loved - just the right amount to keep you interested. I loved how modern it was - with funny parts as well. The book ended perfectly - I wouldn't have changed a thing. Basically, READ THIS. You don't regret it; well, apart from not being able to look in mirrors for a few days...

I am 13 and think this is perfect for that age any age above that; whether teenager or adult. I think I've found my new favourite author!!
