About the Author

Susan Schreyer lives and writes in Western Washington, with her husband, two children and numerous animals of a variety of species. She divides her time between teaching dressage to people and horses and writing mysteries. When the weather gets to her, she works in a veterinarian's office. Once in a while she does laundry and cleans the house, but a good story will always steer her away from that activity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story in an enjoyable series 22 July 2014

This is an enjoyable entry in this series. I won't rehash the plot as other reviews have already covered that area but I want to add that Susan Schreyer seems to really enjoy inflicting appalling families on the two likeable main characters. Paul's parents, who we meet for the first time here, make Thea's mother look good! I think I found this book more amusing than previous entries particularly the antics of the miniature horse that Thea's sister is babysitting.
I am glad to see growth in the Thea /Paul relationship - their immature reactions and lack of insight into each other was beginning to be a negative for me. I almost cheered when Thea stressed after yet another unsettling revelation that they would have to act like a team. Their compassion for the pawn in the game, Noah, was really well drawn.
I was also glad to see that just as Thea appears to have matured and become more confident and assertive, her dressage skills are improving as well. I found the scenes with Blackie to be well written - it gave me a non-rider a real appreciation of the skills needed to perform these routines.
I notice now that I haven't really focused on the mystery in this review and I think that this is because the balance of the book is less on the crime and more on the family dramas. To me that is not necessarily a negative. As this is the 6th in the series I am just glad that characters I have come to care for are finally growing and maturing. It may be fickle of me but I loose interest in stories where the characters show no progress. Hopefully there is another book in the pipeline for Thea and Paul and their family and friends.
5.0 out of 5 stars Families are wonderful...or not 17 July 2014

Susan Schreyer delivers another spellbinding story in the Thea Campbell/Paul Hudson series. There's suspense from the opening moment because Blackie, Thea's horse, is upset...and that always means she's about to be in trouble. This time the trouble isn't horses or murder or any of the things we've come to expect from the well-done series. It's that most troubling relation of all--family. And it begins when Paul's parents arrive, dragging his ex-wife and her son, who they claim Is Paul's son. Coincidentally (or not) Susan runs into Dan Whitaker who claims to be her father and who once stole artifacts from one of Paul's digs. Then a guest is found shot at the B&B where all these difficult out-of-towners are staying. Thea and Paul face so many challenges they don't know where to begin---protecting their marriage and love for each other comes first. But then there's an emotionally neglected child who thinks Paul is his father, a murder, and a missing cache of diamonds. Schreyer skillfully plots twists and turns to make this a page-turner. The ending, to me, is a bit enigmatic, but I loved the book. And it's nice to be with Thea and Paul again--I like series where I get attached to the characters.
5.0 out of 5 stars A good mystery 29 Mar. 2015

The dressage lessons are my favorite part of these mysteries - well, that and the solid love that gets stronger with every incident that could tear some loves apart. These books are numerous dramas with mystery thrown in along with a bit of romance and a lot of love.
5.0 out of 5 stars I loved the first book in this series 11 Mar. 2016

I loved the first book in this series, and each new book is better than the last. I was so conflicted while reading this book - on one hand, I couldn't wait to find out how it ended, but on the other hand, I wanted to delay finishing the last book in the series as long as possible. I hope the author continues the series!

I have read all of Susan's books and loved them all. This latest one is laugh-out-loud funny and a wonderful addition to the series. Bravo, Susan! And I didn't guess whodunit ahead of time!
