Product Description

Review

'Caro Feely has written a careening memoir in Saving Our Skins. So impassioned that it could inspire you to drop all security, move to the backwaters of France, and bet your life, all for the love of making wine.'

(Alice Feiring, author of Naked Wine)

'Should be required reading for anyone who loves wine! Even a teetotaller will drink up every page of Saving Our Skins, for the fascinating behind-the-scenes of organic farming. Making good wine is truly a labour of love and respect for the earth - often, we learn, at the expense of the wine farmer. Caro takes us along in her grape-stained pocket to experience the picking, the pressing, and the profit questioning: can her family afford to continue making natural wine? We quickly turn the pages, eager to find out - and we can't help but root for Caro et compagnie as they creatively keep on top of things, namely a precious heap of grapes!'

(Kristin Espinasse, author of French Essais, Blossoming in Provence and Words in a French Life)

'In Saving Our Skins, Caro's courage and determination leaps off every page, redefining what it means to be brave when you're at the mercy of the weather, uncertain cashflow and endless, often puzzling, French bureaucracy. Caro has produced a beautifully written sequel which in turn seduced and terrified me about the prospect of owning an organic vineyard in rural France. I thoroughly enjoyed the urgency of her writing - I needed a rather large glass of wine when I'd finished. Bravo Caro.'

(Samantha Brick)

'Caro Feely understands that winemaking is an art, a science and a business. Saving Our Skins entertains and informs as it tells the story of her family's struggle to make a living making organic and biodynamic wine in the south of France. Required reading for wine lovers everywhere and anyone dreaming a vineyard dream.'

(Mike Veseth, author of Wine Wars and Extreme Wine and editor of The Wine Economist)

'A must-read for anyone interested in wines and France'

(Living France Magazine)

'inspiring tale.'

(France Magazine,September 2014 issue)

'well worth a read'

(Connexion Newspaper)

I read this book in one sitting - it left me feeling that Caro has changed the way that I consider buying everything. I have read opinions before on why we should buy organic produce but felt that it was rammed down my throat by enthusiastic proclaimers. Caro's reasoning is different in that it simply leaves no argument for failing to consider an organic option when available. Her energy left me feeling exhausted. The book is very well written and a compelling read to find out how they managed to live their dream and still pay the necessary bills to keep going.

I really, really loved reading this book. Its not just its content, but I love the way Caro handles tells a story in the English written word. If you love reading, wine, this book is for you. I also learned alot about growing organic and biodynamics, two this that we will now follow when growing vegetables in our garden. The only sad thing is that I have now read all the books by Caro, and I hope so much that she will keep writing.

It makes me want to save up and go and stay in the wine cottage for my summer holiday and do some wine classes :) any excuse to sup wine! I e mailed the author Caro straight after I finished Grape Expectations to shower her in complements on the book and I was very surprised to receive a lovely reply back from her with in hours!!!

I have just read both books back to back and I am gutted that they are finished. It has been so enjoyable learning about wine and an eye opener about the hazards of farming and growing in a non organic way. Much better to be organic. It's been great reading about the development of the business as a whole and I have learned a lot about how to develop my own business, a small farm campsite in Wales. I want another book Caro!

This sort of read should be enjoyable but it is filled with rants about using properly tested and authorised products and how much the author prefers organic and the biodynamic ways of growing. Each to her own but this book is not enjoyable to read and also not factually correct. Pity.

I greatly enjoyed this second volume of Caro Feely's memoir of launching a successful and completely organic vineyard in the Bergerac, just as I greatly enjoy the wines of Terroir Feely. The first book was about taking the big risk of giving up the corporate careers in Dublin and starting out to make great wine in France with husband and young children. In this second book, although the wolf comes and growls around the door from time to time, the quality of their work and imaginative wine courses and tourism are becoming appreciated. And there are lovely accounts of trips to the wine makers of Alsace and California's Napa Valley. It all makes for a riveting and heartwarming human story, best enjoyed with a glass of two of Feely wine.

Superb! I laughed, cried and prayed. Caro Feely has managed to follow up the corker that is Grape Expectations with the Grand Cru of Saving our Skins. The honesty of the sheer hard work and determination shines through with the turn of every page. The Feely commitment and integrity to their way of live and community are outstanding. A must read for everyone who has dreams of making a change, has ever drunk wine or has to commute on the London Underground! Having visited Chateau Feely I can tell you it is more enchanting that Caro has described. Read the book. Drink the wine. Visit the vineyard!

Living in the french countryside myself I like reading about the adventures of other expats who live abroad. Unfortunately for me this was one book too many and I had to stop reading a third of the way through. I honestly think my life is more exciting. Compared to other writers like Victoria Twead, Carol Drinkwater and Chris Stewart this was very disappointing and I really struggled to get any enjoyment out of it. A real shame.
