I have had a somewhat eclectic career that includes being a marine and environmental scientist, writing and directing factual television programmes and lecturing at universities both in the UK and the US. Bizarrely the science and writing proved useful in fathoming my complex beautiful child and sharing our journey with you.
Writing about improving Henry's diet has definitely been a cathartic process. Over the years we've pretty much kept our food issues to ourselves and not really reached out to anyone else. It felt private, something we were trying to fix on the quiet! So when we looked back and could see that marvellous progression from just three foods to a fantastic variety of fruit, veg and proteins, it was good to report what we have achieved. It seems pretty obvious, I suppose, that a better diet should make you a healthier and happier person. But for someone with Asperger Syndrome there are so many barriers that get in the way of eating well. This book tells you how we went about getting Henry eating a nutritious diet by re-setting his approach to food while having a lot of fun along the way. More than that, I now know him better than I ever did. We can sit down and enjoy the same food together and this means the world to me.
