However, this is where the positives (for me) stop. I'm a wedding photographer and halfway through the day I transfer all images taken to that point over to my MacBook Pro (USB-C only). From the Compact Flash cards (160mb/s rated read speeds) I use a USB C 3.1 adapter and I transfer about 70gb of photos in about 10-15 minutes using his method. This is actual times experienced.
I then transfer the copy fro my MacBook to this 256gb SanDisk 3.1 drive (rated 150mb/s read speeds) For those who don't know, 3.0 is the same as 3.1 (gen 1) in terms of speed. They simply renamed 3.0 to 3.1 for USB-C devices.
This last process should take 10-15 minutes also, but in reality takes over TWO HOURS to complete. Why? Why does this take so long compared with the 15 minutes it takes for me to transfer from the SanDisk CF Cards using the very same ports and technology?
For me, this device is absolutely not fit for purpose. If I wanted these speeds I'd opt for a USB 2.0 USB drive.
SanDisk, any comments?
- Test setup (March 2018):
Straight into a Thunderbolt 3, 2016 15" fully spec'd Apple MacBook Pro. Using this SanDisk 64GB drive in new/unused/pre-formatted (FAT32) condition, straight out the packaging.
Tested using Blackmagic Disk Speed Test, at Blackmagic's 1GB and 5GB sizes. Using the drive's USB-C plug or it's USB-A plug (with an Aukey USB-C-to-USB-A adapter) directly into the MBP:
50-60 (write) / 160-170 (read).
- Result:
So read's on an empty drive are as expected, write's are a bit slow; but TBH they're well within what most of these flash drives' performances tend to be that advertise themselves at the "150MB/s" rated standard.
- Summary:
If you want to spend 2-4 times more on a flash drive that advertises newer "300MB/s" speeds, then of course you may get around a doubling of the read and writes shown here. But of course you're paying usually significantly more for the privilege, and those flash drives are typically much bulkier as well, this one is only 4x2x1cm in size. Also, there are currently NO others (or at least none from main brands) on the market that do both USB-A and USB-C on one stick.
This does the expected speeds, connected using the expected types.
As of March 2018... If you need both A+C connection types, this is the one you're gonna need to buy. If you want faster speeds, at a higher price (19 quid for 64GB model), whilst sacrificing having both A+C USB connections, then look elsewhere.

EDIT (one week later):
Two quick points...
1) Faster drive.
Those looking for SanDisk's ~300MB/s speed drive, which is more expensive (~double the price/GB), bulkier, only has a USB-A port and no USB-C port. Then the "SanDisk Extreme PRO" the current one they do in 128GB & 256GB sizes:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01MU8TZRV
2) Format.
I should have said originally, Mac users will likely want to reformat the drive in Disk Utility app.
The drive natively comes in FAT32, which only allows max file sizes of ~4GB. So I used "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and "GUID Partition Map" type. Likely only work on Macs though, but that's my work environment. Speeds quoted in main review above remain the same, BTW.
ExFAT could also be used (not sure whether that's as "Master Boot Record" or "GUID Partition Map" type? – I think the latter is best for newer OS's like Sierra onwards or Win 7 onwards?), but that's got limitations (e.g. max 11 character drive partition names), see here:
https://support.apple.com/kb/PH22240?locale=en_GB
Hope this helps any Mac (and Win) users who are unsure.
Sadly I was deeply disappointed.
This device gets very hot in use, is very slow when copying anything, it corrupts data and sometimes loses data. Reformatting it has no effect on either it's speed or reliability.
Because I use it at work and it carries sensitive information, when it started going wrong, I had no choice other than to physically destroy the device rather than return it for a refund.
It has been a complete waste of time and money.
FWIW I used it on both a MacBook Pro running Mojave and PCs running Windows 10.
This USB has very fast write performance for its price (Blackmagic benchmark for 4G files is about 30MB/s longterm and real-life performance is also very good). I had those very small "dual" USB drives from top brand and some of their write speeds are about 5MB/s on average. You can find faster sticks but the size will be larger and be more expensive.
This USB stick is good value. Apple store sell a custom made edition of this model but charges £75 for the same 64G capacity.
The major issue is that the package doesn't come with a lanyard for connecting the USB with keychain and I have to buy those separately. The position of the connection for lanyard is at the middle of the body which is very odd. But given the price/performance and the reputation of Sandisk, I can live with that.
