Came formatted in FAT32 so I reformatted to NTFS, but tested speeds first they are same and now I can put big files on it if needed.
Tested as well coping files up to 300MB and large files like 4GB and again speeds were similar. I have attached screenshot.
I use a memory verification program that flashes a data file to each and every memory address on any storage device, it then verifies the integrity of the data written (I've caught and returned a few fakes in the past!)... and gives a read/write speed while it's doing it...
It wrote the data at about 17 Mbytes pre sec.
It read the data to verify at about 130 Mbytes per sec.
Being very careful to 'quote' the data speeds I found as the program states it in MegaBYTES, not BITS. The information that came with this product is a bit confusing as it doesn't seem clear whether it refers to Megabits or Megabytes.. A little confusing if a little misleading regarding its data speeds.
That aside, it does seem quick enough for most applications...
It did FAIL the verification first time through, but I set it to Verify again and it reported no errors. Hopefully just a brief glitch when it read the data first time through (I hope!) but as it did verify there must be no issues with its data or capacity.
Having said that, I then had to format it NTFS for my purposes, which took nearly 3 hours! It crashed out half way through the first attempt to format, so again I set it going a second time. Thankfully it worked.
I'm using it to augment the storage on one of those small netbook things (the ones that typically come with 32GB of storage) and it seems good so far, though I am monitoring its behaviour given the couple of glitches I found while testing and setting it up.
Will update if anything out of the ordinary happens.. but in the meantime it works well as extended system storage, which now includes containing the system's Onedrive too after some reconfiguring.
I also like its low profile as it sticks out very small on the side of the device. You can in theory plug it in and leave it.
Would not recommend for this type of continuous (always plugged in) usage as 2 of my drives have failed after 5/6 month - Probably down to how hot these things get. Failure results in the drive not being recognised in WIN7 / WIN10 for formatting.
Good thing to note is that Sandisk RMA service is top notch and 5 year warranty means that they send out replacements (if approved) within a matter of days after returning failed drive.
It was fast enough to load with MP3 files but I was using a USB2 socket, I'm not going to be doing much transferring, just storing and playing music so the speed really isn't an issue for me.
One thing I picked up from other reviews is that some say it becomes very hot when transferring files. I found this not to be the case when transferring about 14GB of music files from my PC using a USB 3 socket.
I didn't measure it but for a real world comparison I felt it was about as warm as you'd get touching a hot water bottle in a furry cover. Nice and cosy warm!
I've tried it out in the car and in the hi-fi and as expected the minimal amount of work it's being asked to do doesn't warm it beyond ambient temperature.
I hope such techno-babble won't be over the heads of youngsters but my message is that from my experience of it, the heat generated during file transfer and playing music is not an issue.
Not used it for work yet so am giving neutral 3 stars, however, in general I find SanDisk flash drives more reliable than Transcend. Lexar would be another brand I would purchase for work but size, price, and less availability means we usually buy SanDisk and Transcend drives the most.
All this, working on a memory stick, that sits neatly and safely on the equipment, with little danger of being knocked or pulled out by mistake, and looks good!
