The micromate has a nice glossy kind of plastic, that odd white dot has a green light behind it which blinks to indicate reading/writing in progress and although the key/neck chain loop is on the clear USB cover that thing is tough to pull off so little chance of losing it if you take it out and about with you. Only potential problem I see with the micromate is the wide shape might not fit into some some indented USB slots (like my frontside Xbox 360 USB ports which are behind a flap) and it doesn't come with a USB extension cable but I've collected like 5 USB extension cables from other devices over the years so that's not an issue for me.
This was the most stylish of 4x USB readers I've bought
= a bit too wide, so an adapetr would be required for vertical USB slots on thin laptops
= too short body - card is only half inside the adapter
= reflective plastic - attract fingerprints
= bootable / ok for booting from an SD/SDHC card
= Good speed on both PC USB3 and Mac USB2
= nice design
= not disruptive LED
= dual use cup - protecting card or USB connector
= very flat/thin
This adapter is made from a high grade plastic - even nice to touch
A cheaper and faster reader I've bought - Veho VSD-001 - Card reader - all-in-1 ( MMC, SD, RS-MMC, SDHC ) - USB
What more can I say? It works well at what it was intended for.
On the plus side it is a comparatively cheap product, undercutting many of its rivals, and it doesn't look bad. Being a Sandisk product you would also expect quality, given their superb, and richly deserved reputation for flash memory.
Unfortunately this wasn't quite the case. As mentioned before, its width, which at first glance isn't much, quickly becomes a problem when plugging it into a bay of USB ports. Anything next to it must evacuate. Also, surprisingly from Sandisk, it's not particularly quick. Even by usb 2 standards its performance is just ok.
It is (fairly) cheap, but for just a little more you'll get more practicality and far more speed with an alternative product.
However it loses one star because I wish it came with two caps instead of one. If it's in your bag or pocket the extra cap would stop any dust, fluff etc. getting inside the SD or USB connectors.
Because it's quite wide, it can also be a problem if your computer USB port is in a tight space, recessed or with other connectors nearby. I bought a short (6 inch) male to female USB cable to overcome this. Delock USB 3.0 Type A Cable 0.15 m Black
My only complaint is that it comes with a single protective cover, which fits on either end. So when it's in my camera bag, do I put the protective cover on the usb plug end or the sd end? If they supplied two covers it would get 5 stars.
