Ok so the drive will be inside your machine and won't be seen, but first impressions count. The SanDisk drive has a very cheap plastic feel to it which made me wish I had opted to spend a little more and get the SamSung drive. However, on the plus side, if you're using this drive in a laptop, the plastic casing will help save a little on the weight.
Performance in a 2010 MacBook Pro is good and radically changes the user experience compared to that of a mechanical drive. The boot times are super fast, application load much faster than before and due to the fact that solid-state drives have no moving parts, they also help preserve the battery life also.
In summary, the SanDisk drive is a good product and performs very well. The only reason I've scored 4 stars and not 5, is simply down to the fact that the build quality feels cheap when compares to the SamSung Evo.
I bought this SSD to change my old Macbook Pro 2010 HDD. But before doing anything I had to transfer the data form my old HDD to the new SSD and... I had problems to make it work. the Mac was not able to recognise it at all when connected through USB. It looks like the SSD comes with no Partition at all therefore if you want to use it first you need to be sure you can create a partition and format it. It did not work both Mac or Windows PC.
Fortunately I have computers knowledge and I have the means to make it work: more than 1 computer at home. I had to take my PC and connect this SSD to a SATA connection ( as I said, forget about USB right out of the box ), create a partition and format it.
If I would be person with no computer knowledge or no other computer at home to do the job... i would be mostly doomed.
No good SANDISK, no good... please make a partition ... so people does not have this issue.
Then If you want to use it in a Mac you will find that the SANDISK soft to check the SSD is not available for Mac. Again... no good SANDISK, no good at all.
Besides all of that the SSD now works and it improved my old computer performance, it works correctly.
But because 2 issues above I CAN'T recommend this SSD for regular users as there is a unnecessary complexity. I CANT't recommend this SSD to advance users either because the performance is average.
So generally I don't recommend this SSD drive and I might not buy any other SANDISK SSD for Mac computers because I am a little bit disappointed about 2 incomprehensible decisions ( no partition , no Mac soft ).
I use this SSD as only for the Operating System (Currently Windows 10) and for main programs and games, and it seems very fast, both for reading and writing, compared to other drives that I have used in the past.
Advantages:
- much quicker PC startup time. With an SSD for the operating system and an old HDD for data it took around 25 seconds to boot up to the login screen. With two SSDs and no old HDD to take time spinning up, it takes about 12 seconds.
- quicker data access. The old HDD would often spin down to save power, so opening files on it would often be delayed by 5-10 seconds as it spun up again.
Disadantages:
- none
For info I bought one of these [[1-Year Warranty] VicTsing 5Gbps USB 3.0 to SATA 22 Pin Adapter Cable With USB Power Cable For 2.5" Hard Disk Driver] and plugged it into the SSD and a usb drive and quickly copied over the data from the old HDD.
I thought this upgrade to a new SSD was at first somewhat self-indulgent (and why not!!??) - but having got used to it now, I'm really pleased with it and wouldn't go back to the old disk.
It has incredible reading and writing speeds, and will boot your pc/mac in half a heartbeat.
The computer boots in few seconds and the applications boots instantly, but the biggest bonus is the computer will run smoothly and never have lag issues when dealing with loads of opened apps.
Another improvement is the noise... it is so strange to have a macbook so quiet: it is incredible how the mechanical hard drive was noisy compared to this SSD!
I was lucky to buy it for 39 pound during a black Friday and I could say it was the best investment ever for my pc.
SPECS:
Reading speed: up to 530 MB/s
Writing speed: up to 440 MB/s
Sata 3.0 (6 Gb/s)
During my tests it performed almost as SanDisk declared performance:
Read: 516.0 MB/s
Write 355.9 MB/s
