So I thought, I'm wasting so much time waiting for this hard drive, I'll get an SSD. There are lots of respected names in HDD who are in SSD but it made sense to me to buy a brand respected for solid state storage.
So SanDisk it was.
There is an art to buying the right size SSD. With a hard drive you just buy a big one as they are all cheap enough. With an SSD they get expensive as they get bigger. I recently bought a 32GB SSD for £12 off ebay which was fine for what I wanted it for but stupidly small and of no use for general projects.
However 240GB would make a good upgrade to an old laptop once I have finished my experiments.
There is a reason why it's 240GB and not 256GB which is a more usual computer number. I believe it's actually 256 internally but they reserve the extra space for evening up the 'wear' on the drive. An SSD memory cell is actually a little rechargable battery and we all know what happens to them after lots of charging and discharging. So data is not written to the same area all the time, different parts are used. Imagine if you could spread the wear on your lounge carpet. It would not get worn out in the doorway and floor in front of the sofa. It would last longer.
Anyway with the SSD I can do my Linux experiments much faster now.
PS, remember to get one of those adaptors so it fits in a normal drive bay.
Vastly improves start up speed and all apps installed on SSD (5 year old PC - 2.7Ghz iCore7 + 12GB RAM). Partly due to clean install of Windows.
Went from 5+ MINUTES "restart and logon" - to less than 30sec!!!
Software app seems useful. Monitors 'wear' on SSD (all have this 'issue').
120GB is sufficient for Win10 and many apps. 240GB better - but needed urgently (work!). Arrived in under 14 hours! Impressive. Only a drone would have beaten it!
I kept Win10 original installation on original HD's - that way I could go back if there was say incompatible issue with Mobo etc. But not problems - easy install.
Apparently comes with (online download?) of disk cloning software - but I did not use this (original Win 10 installation was TOTALLY scrood up by a M$ "update"! Grrrh). So you could 'move' your current Win configuration from HD to SDD. Check space used/required.
Installation easy. BE SURE to ground yourself. Heed connector label - don't touch. Disconnect power at wall. etc. etc.
This is SATA 3 device (fully compatible with previous SATA 2 - as per my ASUS P6T Deluxe mobo). Make sure you have power connection too. My system is self-built so I'd planned for this day!
Go buy one! Awesome!
However I saw a YouTube video suggesting to put an SSD in an external USB3 enclosure and use this as the boot drive and I wondered if it would actually make a difference. The answer is yes...very much so.
The process is really easy, the parts are really inexpensive, and the end result is quite astonishing. I would strongly recommend anyone with a 2014 Mac Mini to try it, and this particular SSD is both perfectly compatible and a really good price.
I don't think I'm allowed to put external links in a review, but step 1 is to back up your Mac using Time Machine, and Step 2 just go to YouTube and search for "Install & Run macOS Sierra on External SSD or USB Flash Drive". The whole process took less than an hour, and most of it was unsupervised. It's also risk-free because this does not open the Mac at all. Note that I'm using High Sierra, but the same process applies.
No apparent reason for the failure, just turned on PC one day and it had died.
