Product Description

Review

"The Tyndale volumes have long been the premier shorter-length commentary series on both Testaments throughout the English-speaking world."--Craig Blomberg, Denver Seminary

"Tyndale commentaries are always useful, not least because they focus so clearly on the text of Scripture, and do not fall into the trap of paying too much attention to other commentaries and not enough to the scriptural text they are intended to expound and explain. So they retain their usefulness for preachers, Bible study leaders and for all readers of the Bible."--Peter Adam, principal, Ridley College, Melbourne, Australia

"Within its constraints, this series includes some outstanding volumes."--D. A. Carson, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

"There simply is no series of medium-length commentaries that approaches the excellence of the Tyndale commentaries."--Donald A. Hagner, Fuller Theological Seminary --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Joyce G. Baldwin (B.A., B.D.) was principal of Trinity College, Bristol, and wrote several volumes in the Tyndale Old Testament Commentary series. She died in 1996. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The book has an overview of the opinions on authorship and history, then a description of the main themes. These are deep enough to be worthwhile without being too heavy.
The main commentary is very useful as it goes through almost verse by verse, with discussion on major topics through out.
Very good reference for sermons to check understanding of passages.

Baldwin's book is a concise christian oriented commentary on the Book of Samuel. Baldwin's book is for the reader who wants a quick reference to better understand the Book of Samuel 1 & 2. However, the academic may become a little perturb when reading the book because Baldwin on occasion proselytizes. Baldwin undoubtedly has a firm understanding of not only the Book of Samuel, but also the bible in general. I would recommend the book to anyone who is attempting to quickly understand some of subtleties contained in the Book of Samuel, however, I am sure there are more thorough commentaries published for the more serious of mind.

Quite detailed and give good explanations to assist with understanding. I wanted to use it as a help with a Bible Study group for beginners, however was possibly too detailed as we just wanted a summary. So may be better for a more in depth study.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid, mainstream, thorough 18 Feb. 2016
By M. Kramer - Published on Amazon.com

One doesn't go to this for the latest serious biblical scholarship. Baldwin well utilizes sources readily available (be aware the date of the book is 1990, not 2008 - that's only the paperback publication. The author discusses these Old Testament books from a Christian perspective (what else to expect from Tyndale?) avoiding the fringes of interpretation. This is the solid reference I need for the adult Bible study I teach.
4.0 out of 5 stars Scholarly but accessible classic. 26 Dec. 2015

A real scholarly but accessible classic. Not much earth shattering here, but thorough, concise, competent, practical, orthodox. Dr. Baldwin avoids speculation or novelty and explains the text from a sober, reliable, and learned eye. Could be a first choice for a smart small group or adult Sunday School class.
