3D V-NAND Technology
Samsung’s innovative 3D V-NAND flash memory architecture breaks through density, performance, and endurance limitations of today’s conventional planar NAND architecture.
Samsung 3D V-NAND stacks 32 cell layers vertically resulting in higher density and better performance utilizing a smaller footprint.
Incredible Read/Write Speeds
Achieve incredible read/write performance to maximize your everyday computing experience with Samsung’s TurboWrite technology. You can obtain up to 1.9x faster performance than the award-winning Samsung 840 EVO. The 850 EVO delivers excellent sequential read (540MB/s) and write (520MB/s) speeds.
Enhanced RAPID mode
Samsung’s Magician software enables RAPID Mode for up to 2x faster performance (Compared to same drive w/out RAPID enabled. ) by utilizing unused PC memory (DRAM) as a high-speed cache. The newest version of Samsung Magician supports up to a 4 GB cache on a system with 16 GB of DRAM.
Guaranteed Endurance and reliability
The 850 EVO doubles the endurance* and reliability** compared to the previous generation 840 EVO and features a excellent 5 year warranty. With enhanced long-term reliability, the 850 EVO assures longterm dependable performance of up to 30% longer than the previous generation 840 EVO.
* Measured by Terrabytes Written (TBW)
** Measured with Sustained Performance 12hr Random Write Test
Improved Energy Efficiency
The 850 EVO delivers significantly longer battery life on your notebook* with a controller designed and optimized for 3D V-NAND that supports Device Sleep for Windows at a highly efficient 2mW. The 850 EVO supports 25% better power efficiency than the 840 EVO during write operations thanks to ultra-efficient 3D V-NAND only consuming half the energy than that of traditional Planar 2D NAND.
* Compared to standard hard drive & previous generation SSDs
Secure Data Through Advanced AES 256 Encryption
The 850 EVO comes fortified with the latest hardware-based full disk encryption engine. The AES 256-bit hardware encryption secures data without any performance degradation and complies with TCG Opal 2.0. Easily integrate into Windows with Microsoft e-drive IEEE1667 to keep your data protected at all times.
Dynamic Thermal Guard Protection
The 850 EVO’s Dynamic Thermal Guard constantly monitors and maintains ideal temperatures for the drive to operate in optimal conditions to ensure the integrity of your data. The Thermal Guard automatically throttles temperatures down when temperatures rise above optimal critical threshold. This protects your data while maintaining responsiveness to help ensure your computer is always safe from overheating.
End-to-end Integration Solution
Samsung is the only brand to design and manufacture all its components inhouse allowing complete optimized integration. The result – the rock-solid EVO 850, with enhanced performance, lower power consumption with an up to 1 GB LPDDR2 DRAM cache memory and improved energy-efficiency with the MEX/MGX controller – all from the #1 memory manufacturer in the world.

This is a review for the Samsung EVO 850 500GB SSD.
Once it arrived I installed it on Windows 7 64bit PC using AHCI drivers and after formatting it, the actual usage space shrunk to 465GB from the advertised 500GB.
I’m not going to overstate it, by telling you it’s the best thing ever and its going make your PC a lightning fast super computer as I think those statements are over exaggerate. My PC was already pretty fast and this drive replaced a low latency 10,000 rpm Raptor drive. The speed difference I saw was only in virus checking and transferring large files. You will see bigger speed gains on a laptop since they normally come with slow (high latency) 5,400 rpm drives. The product comes with a 5 year warranty.
A CD is included to help clone as drive, for which I had no need as I was replacing a data drive and not a bootable drive.
As for its durability of it, if I get enough “YES” helpful votes I will update this review to tell you how it’s done after a few months. If you vote “NO” please tell me in the comments why you did not like my review so I can improve them in the future.
I’ve included various pictures of this drive from different angles and a crystal benchmark result. Performance wise the speeds maxed out my SATA-II bus at around 280MB.
Thanks for taking the time to read my review.
Here is some benchmarks (on w7x64) with ahci driver by intel:
I bought a cable so I could attach the drive externally via usb in order to clone the old disk to it. First off, I used the supplied Samsung utility. This will only let you copy the partition the operating system is in, plus one other. Like many laptops, this one has a couple of hidden partitions for booting and also to hold a factory image so it can be refreshed if required. The clone software won't copy these. Not a problem, I thought, the laptop is so old now I don't want the original factory image now anyway. The clone took well over 2 hours to copy about 70GB of data. I then shut down, swapped the discs, and turned it on.
It wouldn't boot. Leaving the hidden partitions behind had broken the boot information. I had to boot off a windows install cd and repair the system. Following this, as often happens, it booted ok but I had lost the pretty windows 7 boot animation and was instead presented with the old vista green progress bar. None of the bcdedit/bootrec/bootsect incantations I found online would fix this. Despite it only being a minor niggle, I don't like problems I can't diagnose or fix, because then I don't know what other problems might be lurking. So I ditched it, put the old disk back in, and used the free EaseUS Todo Backup utility to clone it instead. It is ssd aware so the partitions are aligned correctly, and it lets you copy any or all the partitions, hidden or not, and resize them.Read more ›
I'd learned that Macbooks didn't suffer the performance issue due to the use of SSD's so I set about investigating buying a brand new laptop with an SSD installed.
I then learned that you could swap out an old hard drive (HDD) for a new SSD which allegedly would banish the spinning cursor woes of poor performance.
So I thought what the heck - let's try it.
I purchased a Sata/USB lead for a few pounds, downloaded a free cloning tool from CNET and the ordered this Samsung SSD which arrived yesterday.
I had cloned the drive and installed it inside 90 mins then the came the moment of truth - THE BIG SWITCH ON!!!
All I can say is WOW - what a difference - this laggy, slow running, nerve wrecking, frustration building machine has been transformed into a rocket ship.
I have just ordered another of these drives for my personal machine as it would be madness not to.
Copying large files is a breeze between old and new drive, I did a non scientific test of transferring a gig between old style and the ssd drives and the speed up was amazing. Even things like Directory Opus respond much much faster it's like the cpu has now developed ESP!
The software that comes with it is more than adequate for cloning your existing drive or you can install fresh which I did.
Expensive as they are when I can afford 3tb SSD's that will be my next 5 purchases, so Mr Samsung if your reading this let me know.
I play Elite Dangerous and it loads in a breeze and any hard loading does not cause the dreaded stutter in graphics.
This simple upgrade has made computing a joy again, a real joy.
