First thoughts as I released it from it's cardboard prison was, WOW!
It's so sleek and stylish, and thin, so thin.
Set it all up then went through setting up the freeview. First thing I saw was BBC 1 in SD 2D. I thought, yeah that's not bad at all.
Then I tried Avatar Blu-Ray in 2D and the quality is mind blowing. Even if you were just looking for a 2D TV, this one is definitely worth considering.
THEN, I tried Animals United in 3D and that just shocked me, in a good way. I wasn't expecting anything amazing but wow, it really surprised me. I couldn't really notice any crosstalk or anything like that. The depth and feeling of immersion was insanely incredible. The TV seemed like it had another world inside of it.
Next, I gave Black Ops a go in 3D on the Xbox.
With gaming, i wasn't expecting too much at all to be honest, just a bit more depth, but that blew me away too.
Looking down the guns' iron sights felt and looked so awesome I can't explain.
It was harder to play online but that's just a matter of getting used to it.
Last thing I tried out was the 2D - 3D Conversion on the PS3. That added a surprising amount of depth to the screen and is a very pleasant feature.
Overall I'm EXTREMELY happy and impressed with the whole thing, and when it comes to 3D, it's definitely not just a 'gimmick' to me.
This featured highly and so I took the plunge with this Samsung model and, boy, I'm glad I did. I now watch everything, even the soaps because the picture quality is so stunning. Its hard for me to discern the difference between the regular Freeview picture and HD, suffice to say the colours, the crispness, the motion, are jaw droppingly good for both.
2D to 3D picture conversion, interesting novelty, I find it works best with Country File and other swooping, distance landscape shots, but I got my first 3D DVD the other day, the Ocean Wonderland one, and forget what other people say, 3D on this baby off a Samsung BD-C5900 3D Blu-ray Player is eye poppingly effective, like the sea snake that comes right out of the screen with its mouth open and teeth showing to within an inch of your face? We all jumped! Its better than any 3D I've seen at the cinema, here and in the US.
I like the programme guide, there's decent sound, lots of connectors, lots of controls for fine adjustments but I found it was pretty well all set out of the box, haven't tried the "record to USB storage" yet but I'm sure it will be fine and I have it cable connected to my ADSL router which pulls at about 3-3.5Mb. This is absolutely fine for iPlayer, even HD, but, and a big BUT, the web browser interface and all the other web stuff are rubbish, appalling. It might have helped if there was a proper keyboard (as a remote control), I do use my Android Nexus One's keyboard app for typing text in instead of the 1-9,0 remote keypad, but then the interface will still need to be sorted, hence the 4 stars.
Very, very pleased with the set, its performance, the styling - even my partner said the moment she saw it how "good" it looked - but must now start to turn it off occasionally and get back to having a normal life. The Internet part sucks but still very highly recommended because I bought it for the picture quality and without a good picture, what's the point of a swish TV?
STOP PRESS - Turned on the TV last Sunday morning and lo! 2 new services added to the Smarthub. A selection of Internet download 3D documentaries and film trailers and direct Blinkbox access which I much prefer to Love Film as I am happy to pay as I watch and don't have to divvy up a monthly subscription. But arrgggh, that silly log-on interface requires me to type my full Blinkbox subsription name and password through the TV remote - painful, so still 4 stars, maybe 4.5 stars.
The TV itself: After upgrading from an old 26" TV, this is just a dream. The design is sleek, it's very thin and light.
Setting up the TV to work is a very simple process. Tweaking the sound and picture to your own preferences takes a little trial and error, but there are lots of configurations.
SD looks generally good, though the HD picture is just flawless. Navigation through the TV guide is a little slow, though navigating the TV options is swift.
Smart Player is good. Lots of options from LoveFilm to IPlayer, Web Browser and Games.
LoveFilm I have found streams perfectly, iPlayer does not it hangs whilst buffering - research on this leads me to believe this is an iPlayer issue and nothing to do with the TV itself as Sony and LG owners have experienced the same problem.
Not tested the 3D yet as I am still awaiting the glasses. Though to be honest, the HD is so good, I doubt I will watch much 3D - it's a gimmick any way!
Overall I am very impressed with this product and definitely recommend it.
Update - five year's after purchase, the tv is going strong even after leaving it on in the background. Now the downside, I have, again, replaced the remote (three times now). The software is a pain too as the apps such as iplayer constantly freeze and I am unable to select different Apps/programmes in most cases. Great TV though, the picture quality is stll amazing after five year's of usage.
