Product description
Manufacturer's Description
Boasting the world's fastest response time of a blistering 2ms, the SM940BF is the only display of choice for gaming enthusiasts and home entertainment. A combination of ultra sleek design and dual inputs makes this one of the most sought after screens on the market. The SM940BF features MagicSpeed which reduces ghosting and jagged pixel effects ensuring clarity of image and vibrant rich colours.
In order to achieve the blazing two-millisecond response time, Samsung uses its proprietary MagicSpeed and Response Time Accelerator (RTA) technologies in the 940BF. RTA technology is a video processing circuit that ensures stable viewing of DVDs and streaming video. By "jump-starting" the liquid crystals, they are able to turn faster which increases the brightness quicker and the user no longer sees a lag time, a blurring image or ghosting.
The ultra-fast response time allows for flawless picture performance when viewing multimedia-driven applications or engaging in computer gaming. The faster response time ensures better performance of motion video and produces smoother edges, clearer images and a more natural image response. Response time is a critical factor that users should consider when purchasing an LCD monitor. MagicSpeed optimizes the image quality and response time for an ideal viewing experience.
The SyncMaster 940BF also includes several additional proprietary Samsung technologies for enhanced viewing pleasure including MagicTune, MagicZone, MagicColor and MagicBright II .
To maximise image performance and user functionality, the display features MagicTune technology. MagicTune enables users to have full control over all display features with extensive colour adjustment capability for an individual's personal viewing criteria. This produces the best onscreen performance for the optimal personalised viewing experience and allows users to save their personalised display profile.
Incorporating MagicZone technology, the monitor allows the user to select any area of the screen and change its characteristics. By paralleling the On Screen Display features, MagicZone technology enables users to customise the contrast, brightness, colour and sharpness within the selected MagicZone window to their desired viewing preference.
The latest addition to Samsung's award-winning SyncMaster monitor lineup features MagicColor and MagicBright II technologies. With MagicColor the monitor automatically selects the areas of the screen that may need colour correction and selectively enhances that area. For example, MagicColor allows users to remove the unwanted glare of an image and bring back the natural colour appearances automatically.
MagicBright II allows the user to select the proper optimised setting of brightness, contrast and gamma correction for the specific media type that is displayed. Users can select from one of the following five modes: Game, Movie, Sports, Internet or Text. With just one push of a button, users can improve image quality for the specific media type being displayed.
Incorporating both analogue and digital inputs, the SyncMaster 940BF delivers crisp, clean text and bright vivid colours. With a 700:1 contrast ratio, 300cd/m2 brightness, 1280 x 1024 resolution and 160-degree viewing angle, the display ensures even the most mundane tasks are easy on the eyes.

It's a lovely screen. I was expecting to get at least one bad pixel, but it is absolutely flawless. The screen surround is very narrow, so the monitor won't take up any more space than absolutely necessary, and would prove excellent in a multi screen display.
The build quality is very good. The plastic moldings and assembly are very robust. My only slight criticism is that the rear panel which covers the leads as they exit at the back has a tendency to fall off as it is held on only by friction mountings, but this is more an irritation than a practical problem. It's fine if you don't move the leads around.
It comes with all leads required including power, analogue and digital connectors. Personally, I tried both and could discern absolutely no difference in picture quality between digital and analogue modes, but since my KVM switch only supports an analogue lead, this is a good thing for me. I'm not missing anything by using the analogue lead.
Refresh is extremely fast, with no visible blurring or ghosting, and the native 1280 x 1024 resolution is perfectly adequate for all but the most demanding users. The picture is sharp, and lighting even.
All in all, thoroughly satisfied with my purchase.
My first LCD was a 17" unit that sported a cluster of permanently illuminated pixels, not far off screen-centre. I now know that the fault was more than bad enough to secure a replacement but I mistakenly believed at the time that such imperfections were to be expected. Anyway, the 17" LCD was still a big improvement on the 17" CRT that it replaced and it's still a part of my backup system.
My next purchase was a vast improvent - a 19" LCD that I bought locally. With only a single dead sub-pixel, it was bigger and brighter and better in every way but, sadly, only for a few months. It began to 'white-out' the screen briefly on start-up and the problem grew worse until the unit failed completely and had to be returned to the store.
I needed a replacement and some shopping around and perusing some user reviews led me to order the SyncMaster 940BF, from Amazon and I have been using it for several weeks now.
The whole point of relating the foregoing saga is to highlight how each new monitor was a big improvement on the one it replaced. Well, as regards the 940BF, this applies with bells on - no faulty pixels whatsoever, in a stunningly vivid, bright and stable display. I use my machine for activities ranging from work and research all the way through to games, cinema and TV and I find the MagicBright feature a real boon. Apart from dimming one or two brightness settings, I am content with the factory defaults and I have never bothered even to experiment with the other controls. The button second from left on the monitor (MagicBright) lets me select from a range of display settings that have been pre-programmed for various activities. I can choose between settings for Text, Internet, Game, Sport, Movie or Custom and that's all I need. I love elegantly simple stuff like that, so nice one, Samsung!
In terms of picture quality the colours are extremely clear and sharp and perfect for use at just 50% brightness. So if you like your monitor bright then it can be arranged!
When i plugged the monitor in it auto set it's self for screen size and everything was pretty automatic, no fiddling around at all, just a case of picking a larger resolution.
The stand is just the right size i think, and if you have a keyboard with the legs up then the back sits just over the stand. The monitor can be tilted from the base, and although you can't adjust the height of the base / monitor, there is a great deal of scope with the tilting.
When using the monitor, the only thing i notice which is slightly annoying is a little ghosting whilst scrolling up and down fast on websites. if you scroll using a mouse wheel then you won't notice it, and even if you do notice it, you're probably not going to read the screen at that speed anyway!
Overall, it's a high quality monitor at a very low price. There are no fancy gimics with it, but a good piece of computer hardware which does all of the functions you need with a monitor.
