For first impressions, though, I am happy with my purchase. It is truly plug and play with, no installation or configuration required. Have already burned 2 BD -R data disks using the free Ashampoo software suite. The process was quick and hassle free.
An added bonus was discovering that the bundled software does play back blu-ray disks, so no tinkering with VLC or additional purchases are required.
It is compact and lightweight and although made of inexpensive materials is sufficiently sturdy to be carted around.
Compared to more expensive (£99) alternatives I saw in Argos & Maplin, this is more aesthetically pleasing and seems to have more capabilities such as 3D.
It is not identical to amazon's image. There are no blues, only grey lettering and logos with the SAMSUNG logo over the opening and not at the back. Also it shows no abbreviations for compatible disk types. There is no black on the front of the tray, it is the same white as the body of the device.
Delivery and packaging:
The unit came packaged neatly and arrived on time. Item packaging was pristine and original.
appearance and build quality:
The drive is slim, with a lustrous white finish and the blu-ray logo on the top in grey. the unit also differs from the image in that the tray door is also white with a little blue LED beneath the tray door.
The drive is slim and well built, occupying only a little more space than a slim DVD drive and uses only one USB 2.0 port to power itself, meaning the back panel is mercifully free of other connections to add to the already incredible rat's nest behind my computer.
Noise generated by the drive is minimal, with Blu ray discs making barely a whisper and ripping a DVD only gave rise to a moderate hum, and, so far, I have not noticed any excess heat from it either.
The drive is also nice and light, allowing it to slip into whatever compartment you so please and not weigh you down.
All told, good design and build quality, I couldn't ask for much more.
Ease of use and features:
Worryingly, the drive came with a disc, however, this disc only comes with some software you may or may not want - to my relief, all drivers installed correctly without me ever having to insert the disc to get it working properly.
From there it was plain sailing: a quick download of AnyDVD HD and Handbrake later, I was ripping DVD and Blu-ray with ease. The drive shows up in Explorer every time it is used and has, so far, never done anything unexpected or unwanted.Read more ›
Frustrated I was ready to return the blu-ray writer back thinking it is samsung's fault, when I read about the suggestion of using the free ImgBurn Blu-Ray App v2.5.8 to record flawless blu-ray discs. So far almost a full spindle error free, in all possible formats (ISO, Joliet, UDF2.5 etc). And as the writer is very low in power consumption it is an excellent companion to my laptop too. Now I am happy!
The package turned up about a week after ordering, and I was eager to try it out. First annoying aspect was the short USB Lead which was too short for my desktop, so I used a small stool on which to place the Hard Drive. The other worry was though whether it would work with Windows 10. After a couple of dummy runs transferring short movies and slideshows to disc, I am happy to report it does work very well with Windows 10. Phew!! That was a big relief. After playing the discs in my Sony Blu-Ray player, I was quite impressed with the results. Some of the graphics looked stunning, showing great detail, and the soundtrack was pretty good too. Of course, I used TDK BD-RE rewritable discs, and I must mention that the transfers from the Movie Creator does take longer than using standard discs, about 20-30 minutes longer on average, depending on the length of the project. So, patience is needed. I used a desktop which I only bought three months ago for discs transfers, although I did try it on my laptop which is five years old. Unfortunately, the project crashed, there just wasn't enough memory in the laptop to complete. So, I would recommend using an updated Desktop or Laptop with plenty of memory to transfer movie or slideshow projects to Blu-Rays. One more thing, I have not tried playing a blu-ray disc on this via my Desktop, so I cannot comment on this. In the meantime, I can safely recommend this Hardware.
Overall, I have found it does work very well indeed (so far) and I am quite pleased with it. I can safely recommend this external Blu-Ray writer.
