Bought this item less than 2 months ago, I was pleased with the product at first but it has now failed.
It simply blinks and beeps and does nothing. The awful thing that I have saved 500GB of valuable data on it. Samsung says the hard disk does not use a standard sata interface. So I cannot open it and move the disk to a different enclosure to access my data. It looks like the unit is sealed.
I may now have to send the unit to a data recovery company possible at a cost of hundreds of pounds. Do not buy this item. Non standard sata interface.

utter disappointment, dies within months

I had done my research for days before choosing the samsung S2 portable hard drive, mostly based on the reviews here. Migrating from one op system to another, I saved all my codes, images, videos etc. on this hard drive. Must say its speed was not up to scratch, but did not care much, as I was going to use it as backup only and not on a daily basis. Since purchasing I used it once to do a restore, which it did successfully. However, a month later or so after plugging into my laptop it came up with the message "You need to format disk drive e: before you can use it". What? Half a TB data has already been saved on it and I have now no access to it! It is now too late to return it, and would not even do so as there are a lot of copyright images (our own) and footage are o it, not mentioning codes, crypts of several web developments (in case they can be accessed somehow). I don't want it to get lost in a warehouse or wherever. I am stuck, lost all my data and out of pocket. Avoid!!! (review by gallery staff of SW)

Having been stung badly by Western Digital (their unreliable Micro-USB connectors are causing fails on 50% of the drives) I managed to get all my family/kids/wedding etc pictures (which had to be expensively recovered from the faulty WD drive) on this very easily. I reformatted the drive to NTFS as soon as it arrived and it hasn't put a foot wrong. In fact it's been so reliable I've now bought a second for my Dad's PC. The shiny plastic top is protected by the free pouch that Samsung supply and hasn't scratched yet. This is how drives should be; simple, rugged and faultless. Well Done Samsung!

Small, but perfectly formed

I can only congratulate Samsung on this small, but powerful, elegantly designed, yet robust piece of kit that works equally well as a travel companion or a desktop accessory. Unless you are planning to take it hiking, there is probably no need to purchase an additional case either; the sturdy pouch that ships with it should be perfectly adequate for regular business and leisure travel. The drive works right out of the box, as installation of the included software is optional, although you may find it helpful.

The drive contains a back-up utility (slight niggle: only documents are recognised atuomatically, image, video or music files have to be select manually) and an ecryption programme (SecretZone) that allows you to create encrypted virtual drives (only works under Windows). The S2 will work on any powered USB port, including TVs, DVD and Blu-Ray players, so that you can play media files directly from the drive. For some older devices you may need to connect via a y-lead (using 2 USB ports), but they are cheap to buy.

In my view, this is currently the best portable storage solution you will find at such a competitive price. And it also comes in pink and blue, if black is not your thing.
