Excellent monitor, really does justice to 12meg photos. Its quick although it did hav e speed problem when we tried to copy a cd. hence the 4 stars. It doesnt have mp3 converter, need to get your own. Comes preinstalled with office 2011 starter pack. Basic word and excel with ads. We just got rid of the office stuff. Win 7 not keen on openoffice took a while to realise had to set the compatabilty to XP. Set up home network with out any bother. Seen it selling elsewhere for a lot more cash. Only 3 usb ports but has HDMI and monitor out. We think its an excellent value main family laptop. Cant really get much better for the price.
Delivery was really fast - following day, exactly as expected. I already purchased a Samsung Netbook for my wife 18 months ago, so I knew what to expect, but I was still pleasantly surprised. On opening the box the notebook was well protected and looked every bit like the online images. Very little documentation, but as a seasoned user I didn't need much guidance. Even for a first-timer, there should be no problem to get up-and-running. The more detailed user manual is accessible from the Samsung group in All Programs, along with a host of other support applications. I'm not a big fan of built-in games, but if that's your bag then there's also a range to choose from in amongst the built-in software.
The screen is clear, bright and adjustable from the usual blue function keys, as is the sound. The reflection from the shiny surface takes some getting used to after a matt one, and you find yourself avoiding windows over your shoulder. But in most indoor situations it works well. I've not tried outdoors but would imagine it to be nightmare. That said, the quality of the image is outstanding and adds a degree of depth and clarity to my photographs (a primary use for me). Going back to the sound, it's totally adequate for personal listening at say arm's length - any more than that you'd be thinking of utilising the audio jack with something a bit more powerful or perhaps headphones. Also not used yet is the HDMI socket, but that's another option if you want to play through your TV.
All USB and other sockets are on the sides, so no struggling at the back edge to find connections. With just three USB sockets I began to feel limited, having moved from a desktop with 4 at the rear and 2 up front. But I now find that I only use the sockets when I really need them, whereas before they were permanently connected to linked items (phone cradle, MP3, printer, etc. I've even sacrificed one USB for a nano transmitter for a slimline cordless mouse (nothing wrong with the touch pad, but like others, I'm more productive with a mouse!)
The simple user manual gives sound advice on avoiding overheating. The slots underneath are limited and easily covered if you don't look out, so cooling is quite critical - certainly worth remembering if you happen to use this notebook on a soft fabric surface (lap, thick tablecloth or bed cover).
The keyboard is a joy - well spaced keys, nice positive feel, and to date no accidental wrist contact with the touchpad (so often annoying on my previous laptop). The keyboard is slightly sunken below the overall level of the machine, so that adds to the ergonomics.
I've seen some comments about the cosmetic appearance of this notebook, and perhaps the ridged surface on the outside of the lid is not to everyone's taste, but it's certainly distinctive. The two-tone stands out from the mainstream all silver or grey/black models. The long-term durability of the silvering on the area around the keyboard and touchpad remains to be tested; so far it's looking good and seems fairly resistant to scratching. The shiny black surround to the keys is both attractive and durable - I thought it would show the greasy finger marks more, but I was wrong. Talking of finger marks, they do show up a little bit more on the glossy screen compared with a matt version, but that just teaches you to stop pointing at things!
Performance is as you'd expect. With the i5 processor and 6Gb of RAM it's pretty slick. I'm running Office 2010 applications with ease, and older Adobe CS stuff is easily handled (e.g. Photoshop and Dreamweaver). The NVidia graphics work well too with no hesitation whatever I've thrown at it. The location of 32 bit (x86) programs takes some getting used to as part of the move to 64 bit Windows 7, but so far I've found only a few compatibility problems, most of which were resolved through online searches for the software providers support functions. Will I ever use up the 640Gb of disk space? Highly unlikely, even with all the camera images I store - it's more than enough for most people. Since buying the RV511, I purchased a 320Gb Buffalo MiniStation for backup purposes, only for my own files as Samsung provide a worthwhile system recovery using a partition on the main drive.
Battery life is always a difficult one to report on since different users may be running a variety of applications. I would consider myself to be an average to intensive user - not gaming, music or video viewing, but general computing with a reasonable amount of business graphics. So far I've had spells of more than 5 hours on purely battery, and I believe the built-in Samsung battery optimisation program is contributing to that. The Wi-Fi is quick to react wherever I've used it and connection has never been a problem, like wise when I've had to resort to a cable LAN connection.
Another subsequent purchase was a Duronic neoprene case. Waterproof and padded, I considered this essential to protect my new Samsung. It's worth checking out the various sleeves available to make sure you get one that fits snuggly around a 15.6 inch machine. The Duronic has the added benefit of a pocket on the front where I can carry my slimline mouse.
Overall I'm extremely pleased with the RV511. I stupidly hesitated when the earlier Amazon offer reduced the price by almost £200, but when I did eventually buy at £549.99, there was a £50 cashback from Samsung, so the outcome was the same. I believe the spec is excellent value for money, and to date I've had none of the negative experiences reported by others. I spend a lot of time tailoring my computers to my way of working (task bar, menus, shortcuts, etc.) and the Samsung is making that job almost effortless. Just like everything else about it!
There is no Caps Lock indicator, no scrolling from the touch pad, no multi-touch gesture control on the touch pad and it generally feels cheap and poor quality.
The hard drive is split into 120gb and 500gb. It defaults to the 120gb so this is something else that needs to be watched and managed.
However is is now fast with the i5 cpu and has a nice keyboard.
Overall disappointing.
Having owned other makes before i decided i would like to stay with a samsung as they are reliable and the build quality is really good.
Delivery was really quick.(2days)
Inside the box is a recovery cd , laptop , battery , quickstart guide and power lead.
It was really straight forward to setup and within 30 minutes i was good to go.
As soon as you start the laptop it asks you to partition the harddrive , so i set my main c: drive at 150gb and left the rest to drive D , which suits my purposes really as i will not be installing alot of software.
I removed the trial version of Norton security and office 2010 and installed my own version of office 2007 and mcafee security ( which is free with o2 broadband).
There is quite a bit of trial version software preloaded, which i really hate , but once removed , its no big deal.
The first thing i did was charge the battery and head over to my brothers house to show him my new laptop. We decided to see how HD video on youtube performed ( we did this at his house as he has btinfinity ( 40mb connection)
Well the picture quality was stunning but the screen kept flickering once in a while which worried me slightly.
I got home and tried the youtube videos at home and the same thing happened , so i removed the battery and plugged it in directly to the mains and the problem vanished. It would appear the graphics card doesnt have enough power from the battery to perform during hd playback but works fine from mains power.
I have been to nvideas website to download new drivers for the graphics card but there is nothing available for the 315m at the moment , so the flickering issue might well be cured by a later driver version in future.
This issue isnt a huge problem as my laptop rarely leaves home , its more a desktop replacement as my house is too small for a big computer , so it is constantly run from the mains.
The keyboard is really nice to use and it has a nice big wrist rest. The built in number pad is a really neat addition especially since i do alot of spreadsheet work.
The touchpad also operates like many touch screen smart phones for functions as zooming in , rotating etc.
I connected to my wireless network without issue , and decided to pair my blackberry torch via bluetooth to the laptop and transfer some files - excellent . Very simple to setup and no hastles.
In summary , this is a fantastic laptop and a good price for the specification.
Would i buy it again - Yes - without question.
pros
Best spec for the price ( £550 for rv511-s03)
great screen
laptop doesnt harvest greasey fingerprints as there are no shiney surfaces
fantastic keyboard
bluetooth v3
great battery life ( 7 hours watching youtube vids and some dvd burning / ripping)
good speakers with plenty of volume
nice webcam and software comes with some fun/good features
fits in my 15.2 inch laptop bag so no need to buy a new one
comes with recovery cd so no need to backup the laptop onto dvds as soon as you turn it on.
cons
power connector location on the laptop
screen is a little stiff to open , im sure it will free up over time
too much trial version software
lack of graphics card drivers from nvidea to resolve flickering issue of hd playback on battery power.
lack of usb v3
my advice is , if you are thinking of buying a new laptop and are looking at this one , DO IT, you wont regret it.
I am now looking to sell my r60plus to make the cost of this laptop even better :)
