Having researched for ages, I was going to buy a Fujitsju AH532 with an identical spec to this machine for about £70 less, but when all the prices went up literally overnight (grrr) I bought this on the rebound, although I'm glad I did.
I'm not a computer expert by any means so I'll give you my general impressions. Physically it's a nice machine. Although predominantly plastic it's still pretty classy. It's a solid unit and it looks good with the silver front section where the trackpad is located. Keyboard absolutely fine. I don't think it's that heavy for a 15 inch laptop although I'm noticing the difference over the netbook I had before!
The spec, from what I can tell, is pretty impressive. I wanted the most bang for my buck and the i5 3210 is a third generation processor and from looking at CPU comparison charts it seemed to be twice as powerful as my desktop PC, a significant improvement. 6GB of ram is also good, and although I've not tried any games (I have an Xbox) apparently the HD4000 graphics are reasonably good and will play most modern games albeit not on the highest settings.
The machine fires up pretty quickly, less than a minute with Samsung fast boot enabled. In terms of battery, I guess it's pretty standard. Of course the estimate of over five hours is probably a bit optimistic, that said I've been surfing and watching videos for the last 2.5 hours and I have 30% charge left, so it seems good enough. If you use Samsung's selection of power saving settings you could definitely get longer use from it. I don't intend to lug this thing around so it's not much of a factor for me.Read more ›
Other nice hardward decisions, 2x USB 2.0 AND 2x USB 3.0 AND HDMI AND VGA. All options catered for here. Shame about the card reader only allowing for SD cards, multi reader would be nice but it is probably the area where I'm fine them skimping on. Speakers are also weak just like most laptops. Screen is average, not bad but not as high spec as other parts of the machine. Internals are very good for the price, ivybridge i5 good amount of HD & RAM. One niggle on the hardware front would be the hinge, it's strong but only tilts about 100 degrees, this is a very shallow tilt not ideal.
On the software side, Samsung have been surprisingly restrained in terms of bloatware. Don't get me wrong, you'll still need to run pcdecrapifier and remove a few other bits and bobs but in comparison to other laptops it's surprisingly lean.Read more ›
This Samsung model is an attractively styled machine but it is quite heavy and as for literally being a "laptop" one would be advised to place a good layer of insulation between the unit and the "lap" as any period of operation beyond a few minutes causes the base to become uncomfortably warm. Further on the minus side I find the opening of the CD drive to be awkward but perhaps that's just me! In keeping with the current trend for such devices this laptop does not come with a very extensive handbook. A considerable degree of background knowledge is assumed.
Overall this is a notebook that represents good value, it will not disappoint.
The only negatives I have is that there are not physical switches to turn off the WLAN and BT easily (software driven keyboard shortcuts instead). Would have been nice to come with a BluRay player too but that's easily fixed. Screen is great (no reflections, unlike a Sony I had recently but returned).
A 2nd hard disk bay and an SSD (I had from an old desktop) and it's whizzing along nicely. :)
The maximum RAM is not 8GB (FYI). A £32 8GB chip from Amazon and I now have 12GB. I plan to go to 16GB. Works great!
Windows Experience ratings.
CPU - 7.1
Memory - 7.4
Graphics - 6.5
Gaming Graphics - 6.5
Hard disk (AFTER installing an old SSD - not the default mechanical one that's supplied) - 6.8.

Battery life is shocking. I have only had this laptop over a year and the battery only lasts an hour or so. And the start up is also very slow.Published on 12 May 2014 by Mr. S. Patel
