Samsung 960 EVO M.2-2280 500GB PCI Express 3.0 x4 NVMe Solid State Drive
Discover the next advancement in SSD technology with our high-performance, highly reliable 960 EVO Series NVMe M.2 SSDs. Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) with a new Polaris controller outperforms our SATA SSDs with exceptionally fast read/write speeds, and Samsung TurboWrite technology accelerates write speeds even further. Samsung's Magician software solution provides advanced functionality to manage, monitor and optimize drive performance.
Raise your performance expectations
Enhanced bandwidth beyond the SATA interface provided by the NVMe interface, combined with the new Polaris controller facilitates sequential Read/Write speeds up to 3,200 MB/s and 1,800 MB/s respectively. Plus, the new Intelligent TurboWrite technology accelerates write speeds even further.
Manage your drive like magic
The 960 EVO comes with the newly upgraded Magician—an advanced software solution for users to monitor, manage and maintain the drive. Magician provides personalized firmware checking and additional functions tailored for individual user's drives. It even updates the firmware automatically to make sure that the drive's performance stays up to date.

Blew my sata ssd out of the water.

Sequential Read : 511.2 MB/s
I have also purchased the Asus Z370 Prime board with the I7 8700 Cpu and 16 gigs of DDR4 Ram.
I already have a SSD but decided to check out the M.2 Drive and here are my thoughts.
Bootup in 12 seconds from Bios and programs such as Camtasia Video editing opens in seconds with no splash screen.
Compared to my SSD this M.2 is very quick as I did a online benchmark and it rated it at 4x quicker than the SSD.
I only purchased the 250 Gb due to money restraints but next time I will get the larger one as they do rock.
I think they are great for Video processing and photos and faster applications but on gaming I have not tried yet but your processor and Ram and video card come more into play than the drive.
Its easy to fit just slots in at an angle then screwed down on your board just make sure your board supports M.2 on the PCI Express bus or it will be no faster than the SSD using Sata.
Final thought its worth the extra cash.
Do you notice the difference? That sort of depends whether you have Superfetch and Prefetch disabled in Windows. They're Windows applications that speed up disk access by a sort of intelligent cache system. If you disable them there is a noticeable difference between a SATA SSD and a PCIe SSD. If you don't have them disabled then there is less of a difference. Superfetch and Prefatch use your CPU and RAM, so there is some real incentive to having them disabled.
Is the difference worth the money? Again the answer depends. At the moment the price difference between SATA and PCIe is almost 100% so it's pretty difficult to justify. I certainly would not throw your old SATA SSD out yet. Only if you are building a new PC or your existing SATA is coming to end of life and needs replacement would I consider a PCIe. And if you are looking for a new drive it comes down to "can you afford PCIe? If you can, then get one. If necessary then get a small one for you operating system and a larger SATA for everything else.
When extremely busy these things can run pretty hot for a few seconds so coolers are popular for them. Some motherboards have sockets directly under the graphics card and this is a really bad place to fit them, considering they already have minor heat issues. Look for a socket that is well away from the graphics card. A cheap cooler is more than enough and I like the Gelid Solutions Sub-Zero. It's simple, cheap, easy to fit, and works as well as anything else.
I bought one of these for my new PC to serve as a boot disk. They are so good, I'm going to buy another to use for data and games.
in my system:
ASUS X99-A with Intel I7 5960X
ASUS GTX 970
System windows 10: Samsung 960 evo 250 Gb
Temp: ........... Samsung 850 PRO 250 Gb
Storage: ....... Seagate 4 Tb
Speed change from: read 520 mb/s to 3400 mb/s
write 505 mb/s to 1450 mb/s
with Crystal Disk Mark
the speed to load Windows increased just 2 second (I know, its a nonsense) but when you work with PREMIERE or AFTER EFFECTS you will understand why its so advantageous.
Quite amazing performance, from powering on i'm at the desktop within 5 seconds and all programs stored on the NVME drive are instantly available. Ensure you download "Samsung Magician" software soon after you build/upgrade your system and it will automatically regulate and update the drive in the background. Theoretical read speeds are up to 32GB a second with write speeds up to 1.5GB a second which is up to 4 times faster than a normal SATA based SSD and infinitely faster than a traditional hard drive. I do advise if you plan on using this as your boot drive (in other words you plan to install your Operating system on it) then try not to clog the drive up with large files or programs like games. Either get a second SATA SSD or Hard Drive for those large files and it will help the drives endurance. I wholeheartedly recommend this drive, once you experience the speed you won't every go back to a hard drive or even a SATA SSD.. my one and only warning would be NVME drives can get hot so ensure your case has good ventilation and if your motherboard doesn't come with a direct contact heat spreader then ensure you have a fan blowing air over the drive if possible. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
This performance also makes a significant difference to the PC in day to day use. Windows 10 opens programs almost instantaneously.
Expensive but recommended. It has a longer life than many other similar drives (e.g. Western Digital ) so worth the extra in my view.
