One of the key features of the Samsung 860 EVO is its speed. It offers faster read and write speeds than most traditional hard drives, which means that users can enjoy faster boot times, application loading, and file transfers. The SSD is also built with Samsung's V-NAND technology, which offers improved endurance and reliability.
The 250 GB storage capacity is suitable for everyday use, whether it's for personal or professional purposes. Users can store their operating system, programs, and files without worrying about running out of space. Additionally, the 2.5-inch form factor makes it easy to install in a desktop or laptop computer.
The Samsung 860 EVO also comes with a range of useful features, including hardware encryption, which provides enhanced security for sensitive data. It also comes with Samsung's Magician software, which allows users to monitor and optimize the performance of their SSD.
Overall, the Samsung 860 EVO is a solid choice for those who are looking for a reliable and efficient storage solution. While it may not be the most cutting-edge SSD on the market, it offers a great balance of speed, capacity, and reliability at an affordable price point.
First some background.
I had a 13-year-old VAIO laptop that was running Windows 7 (from a clean install). The laptop gradually got slower and slower (you know the 3-5 mins to boot up, 2-3 mins to shut down kind of thing) so I decided to go the SSD route.
Initially upgraded the laptop with a 500Gb Crucial MX500 SSD but then saw a good offer for the 860 EVO. The Crucial SSD had Windows 10 on (clean install using the Windows 7 key) and all of my usual programs (M$ Office, Gadwin Print Screen, VLC Media Player) and my WiFi printers configured so all I needed to do was clone this drive to the new Samsung Drive.
Plugging the 860 EVO into an external USB interface allowed me to clone the MX500 to the 860 EVO. I have used Acronis True Image for years but encountered a problem last year where it wouldn't detect a second internal m.2 SSD in another laptop and I was directed to use Macrium Reflect 7 (which is free). No problem sorting out the m.2 cloning. Anyway, back to the 860 EVO.
Macrium Refelect allows you to easily (using drag and drop) to move the partitions from one drive to another. This is important if upgrading from a smaller to larger hard drive - and this is why. If you make sure that the C: drive (or whatever drive/partition is to be used for data) is the LAST partition (i.e. the right-most one) with empty unallocated space to the right, you can extend the partition (either during the cloning procedure or later on in Disk Management) which enables you to use the whole of the new drive (i.e. you are able to use the extra space that you've paid for).
IMPORTANT: Before undertaking the cloning procedure, use Macrium Reflect to make a Rescue Disk *FIRST*
This will enable you to sort out a boot problem if after cloning you find that your new SSD won't boot. (go to Backup Tab.
Click on the 'Other Tasks' tab, click Create Rescue media --> select your device (CD/DVD or USB) --> 'Advanced' --> Click on 'Choose Base WIM' tab, click on 'Windows 10 PE (WADK)', click 'OK' click 'Build'. This puts a 'lite' version of Windows on the rescue media (Windows PE for those interested) and the various drivers for your pc.
One final note, it takes quite a while to make the Rescue Media so be patient!
Cloning:
To clone the MX500 to the 860 EVO took around 45 mins in total.
Swap the drives over (the internal MX500 --> external USB and the 860 EVO --> internal) and re-boot.
It *should* boot into Windows fine. If not, shut down the pc, insert your rescue media (see above) and boot from the rescue media into Macrium Reflect (note this may take several minutes of looking at a black screen!) Once booted, select the 'Restore' tab then 'Fix Windows Boot Problems'.
I bought two of these 1Tb 860 EVO SSDs - one cloned without a problem and happily booted into Windows at the first attempt whilst the second (in a different machine) needed the 'Fix Windows Boot Problems' noted above.
Now to the drives themselves.
They are fast(*) and have a large capacity. You can download (from Samsung) the SSD Magician software which allows you to monitor the state of the SSD and optimise it for your use. *DON'T use this software to clone your existing drive* Make sure that you click on 'Over Provisioning' in the Magician software and set the OP to 10% (this will increase the life of the SSD dramatically).
*Benchmarking this drive (using Crystal Disk Mark) showed that the main 'bottleneck' was the interface in these older laptops - so you won't get the advertised 550/520 MB/s speeds - except in recent pcs that use the SATA III interface. Both the Crucial MX500 and 860 EVO topped out at 284/266 MB/s which is about right for SATA II.
Whilst this is a review of the 1Tb Samsung 860 EVO, I have given detailed instructions as to how to clone your existing installation to help others.
There's not much to say about the drive itself other than it is large and fast and I can thoroughly recommend it.
Here is how I got it working:
1. Run chkdsk /f /r on the new Dell Laptop – I found a fault from the factory that chkdsk corrected.
2. Remove both drives and place them into USB to SATA adapters, enclosures or cable, you choice.
3. Copy them (not a hot copy while running the OS as the Samsung SDM software should do) using an alternative copy program on a separate machine, eg I used Apricorn EZ Gig IV Cloning Software.
4. This does not extend the partitions correctly on the new larger drive so you need to delete unallocated space then extend the C: space partition into that unallocated space using free third party software such as AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition. Make sure you tick the green tick box to action each step otherwise it hasn't actioned the step.
5. I would then recommend Laplink PC Pro/Ultimate for copying the old Windows laptop look, settings and files to the new laptop – that software has worked for me twice, without fault and saved weeks of potential problems.
Best of luck.
Older diagnostics before resolving the issue:
SSD arrived 02Jul18 (3-4 days late from Amazon, not a 3rd party seller) and although recognised by Samsung's Data Migration software, fails to clone using Samsung's latest v3.1 (May18) software. There are a couple of locations on Samsung's websites to download this, but DOS fc file compare shows they are identical. Downloaded latest software as per email link from Samsung tech support (HANARO are the distributor in Europe located in Netherlands) and it still fails to clone using Samsung's bought in Clonix software. As at 05Jul18 currently awaiting HANARO's technical guys to provide some feedback or workaround, but it may be getting returned.
As I've upgraded loads of times in the past (while I wait for HANARO to tell me what the fault code means) I've used Apricorn EZ Gig IV to clone the SSD and this works, but given that Samsung's own software fails to work this is probably not a good long term reliability omen (disc parameters may be marginal) and so may return this and get a replacement that at least can clone first time with Samsung's own software as most people have. However it could be that Samsung's apparently fantastic cloning software they buy in from Clonix is just not as good as everyone raves about and it is in fact Clonix software that is at fault. At least a replacement that is fully functional with Clonix's software may mean the SSD will be more within Samsung's own spec from day 1 and be more reliable long term.
I was cloning a 256GB M.2 drive, but on this occasion the Apricorn software unusually didn't autosize/scale the drive so I'd to use AOMEI Partition Assistant to delete the unallocated 614GB partition then merge that with the partition with the OS. The Apricorn clone only took an hour, but it took another 7 hours for the AOMEI to re-partition the drive. So after 8 hours I've now got what I should have had had the original Samsung Data Migration software actually worked. I've not seen an updated firmware for the 860 Pro either (almost all the other consumer SSDs from 840 to 970 seem to have firmware upgrades), so there just seems to be no way to get this clone process to work with the Samsung tools reliably.
If you don't know what you are doing and want an easy upgrade, choose something else as there are other MLC drives with high TBW on the market. Samsung's reputation for a simple upgrade on this occasion gets 0 stars - 1/20 are giving 1* for this which is pretty poor compared with the 850 Pro and Evo..
As for the disc reliability, it is far too early to say, who knows, but this must get a 1 star for the problematic software alone. Reading the reviews Samsung must know this, but are not doing anything about it. The reason for buying a Pro is for long term reliability of the MLC transistor arrangement and high TBW. Given the problematic Clonix cloning, it could go either of two ways. The software is pants (but everyone raves about how perfectly it does an clone without issue) and there is no problem with the SSD, or more concerning the software is fine and the SSD parameters are just outside the spec and the Clonix software times out due to this and is warning with the -00001 error code that the SSD is out of spec. I really don't know, but I've contacted HANARO tech support and await their feedback. Any doubt that it is a disc fault, it is going back. (uploaded small 40kb screen grab but won't display, sorry)
7jul18 - Feedback from HARANO (Samsung's distributor tech support) didn't help - there are no disk errors on running checklist and the Dell laptop is brand new out the factory:
The causes of the Error 00001 [ffffff] could be :
1. Source data disk is corrupted - logical or physical
2. SSD connection is bad - connection or cable is defective
Possible Solutions:
1.1 Run chkdsk on the source disk. You should always run chkdsk / f / r. This is a Windows command that finds errors and possibly fixes the hard disk. After this, restart the system. Note that cloning is not possible if the Windows file system is corrupted.
1.2 Note that cloning is not possible for any errors with the source data disk.
2.1 For a SATA to SATA connection, change the SSD from SATA to USB (For SATA please change from SATA to SATA)
2.2 Try a different connection in case of a connection problem.
If the problem persist, please try with a fresh install of the system
28/Jul/18 Update - Following the instructions from Samsung to run chkdsk, the Clonix SDM software still fails on this new Windows 10 Dell 7573 Laptop. Chkdsk did find a fault on the new M.2 drive, and has fixed it, but no success with the Clonix SDM. The 7573 is a 15in version of the 7373 that is available in Currys. As Clonix Samsung Data Migration software only works while copying from the laptop and OS that is running, I have to give 1star or less for the overall product (migration software + disk). The 860 Pro can be read from in a USB caddie, so the SSD works, but the Data Migration software just gets 0. I can't even use it to have the source in an external M.2 USB caddie, and the target in external SATA 2.5in adapter. Sorry Samsung, you need to work on this to make it 100pc compatible in such circumstances.
