Unreliable connection to 2019 Macbook Pro via official Apple HDMI dongle

Unreliable connection to 2019 Macbook Pro via official Apple HDMI dongle
I've owned the Samsung LU28R550UQUXEN 28" UR55 4K UHD Monitor for about 18 months now and use it daily.Connection to Macbook Pro 2019 model:The picture quality is great once the monitor is up and running. Probably with other computers it's a great monitor, but with my Macbook Pro 2019 connecting it via the official Apple HDMI/USB thunderbolt dongle it's a disaster. I own two of the dongles and I get the same results with each one. When waking the Macbook from sleep, it can take up to 30 seconds for the picture to appear on the monitor. Worse case it doesn't appear at all and the monitor cycles through HDMI 1, HDMI 2, Display Port input modes trying to find a signal. Sometimes the only solution is to reboot the Mac to regain the connection, though that only happens around once a week. Once connected the picture is usually stable, though occasionally it flickers off and then comes back on again a couple of seconds later. That usually only seems to happen just after the Mac and screen have been woken up and have just gained a connection. The Apple HDMI dongle seems to get quite warm, not sure if that is the cause of the issue. Probably not though as this can happen after the Mac has been sleeping for a while. Whether these issues are the fault of Samsung or Apple not testing their products properly, I don't know. I also use the monitor with an old Mac Mini via the display port connection and that seems to work well and doesn't suffer the connection issues outlined above.Electromagnetic interference:When I first installed the monitor I had power extension leads with multiple power sockets sitting on my desk into which was plugged the power supplies for the monitor, laptop, phone chargers, Mac Mini computer, lamp etc. I found that straight after installing the monitor my Macbook Pro would regularly lose connection to the wireless mouse and keyboard to the point where it wasn't possible to work. I solved that issue by moving the power extension lead sockets onto the floor under my desk.Onscreen display:Now let's consider the onscreen display/menu. I've owned a few Samsung smart TVs, and I bought this Samsung monitor on the basis of my experience with the TVs which has been pretty good. I would have expected a UHD monitor to have a UHD onscreen display/menu, as do the UHD smart TVs. Seems that the onscreen display is limited to HD resolution, which looks bad in my opinion when it appears over an UHD image. Perhaps the engineering budget that goes into the TVs is higher than the budget for monitors?I hope this review helps you decide whether it is the right monitor for you. For me personally, I wish I had bought something else because primarily I use it with my Macbook Pro and the unreliable connection wastes some time every week. Perhaps I will sell it and try my luck with something else. If you intend to use it with a computer that has a built in HDMI or Display Port connection and so do not need to use a dongle perhaps it will be fine for you.

I bought this for my son, who is both an avid gamer and video editor. Given the sophistication of his editing (uses Adobe Creative Cloud), he needed a 4K screen to move into 4K editing, with good response time for gaming.

So far, he tells me this is great for both. Maybe there is a little halo effect from moving up to 4K for the first time, but he is notoriously picky about equipment, food...and just about everything, so this is praise indeed. And while I was never convinced by the whole curved-TV phase that came and went, for more up close work, the gentle curve makes for a immersive experience used as a monitor.

Set up is straightforward, but do beware of playing with the various international adaptors that come with the PSU: once on, they lock and cannot be removed (well, not easily). After some tense moments (both emotionally and physically, through trying to prise the damn EU adaptor off), I managed to rectify my mistake with only superficial scratches to the PSU. Ater that, it was a breeze: fit the base, power and video cable (HDMI or DisplayPort only), plug in and with the right card, this comes up right away with no hassles. There are options to route cables through the stand, for a neater desk, a port cover for the back (for a slick look that no-one will see) or, with this removed, what looks like mounting points for a screen stand (sorry, not sure if this is full VESA, but will check next time I take a look).

Construction of the screen and stand is solid and sleek, as you might expect from Samsung, but it is the picture that impresses. Full 4K clarity with great contrast, responsiveness and colour. The upscaling works really well, lifting normal HD content to a higher perceived resolution. My son reports also the the response (at 4ms) does not disappoint either: I realise there may be screens with faster response, but not many at 4K and none at this price point.

So, overall, very good. I must admit to being very jealous of my son now and am now tempted to bag two or four of my own for my office/studio.

For just under £200 you get a 28" UHD screen 3840 x 2160 res with razor-sharp definition - I paid £185 5 years ago for a Dell 1920 x 1080 res 23" screen which I still use and has been great, but just shows what incredible value we get as consumers currently! I plugged into my Dell XPS15 and it worked immediately as a second screen no problems - I recommend installing DisplayFusion so that your mouse pointer doesn't get "stuck" moving between screens of differing resolutions. The Samsung is superb with three whole pages of an MS Word document displayed next to each other crisp, clear and very readable. A second screen is always essential, the Samsung is like having two screens for the price of one because of the amount of windows that can be displayed simultaneously and still be readable/ useable. I was tempted to knock of a star because the stand could be better - there is no adjustment capability - the Dell can be slid up and down as well as rotated through 90 degrees which can be useful. But to give it 4 stars would be an injustice, it's a superb bit of kit. I am impressed. I don't do gaming so I can't speak for it's ability in this area.

    For whoever is reading,

I received this monitor on the 18th Jan, and can finally write the review (date of writing 1st Feb).

First of all, I want to say I'm really happy with how this monitor looks and performs. So please dont let anything you read below take away from it's performance or how 'happy' you would be if you bought it. Im considering getting another one of the next month or so.

    Now, the positives:
    - it's a very pretty monitor in terms of picture quality.
    - great entry level for 4k @60hz, so overall it's a very nice monitor if you're just working from home, gaming, editing video/photos like I am.
    - i have heard people complain about receiving the monitor with some dead pixels on edges - not the case for me.

I do apologise for not being extremely technical, computer terms are foreign to me. But it's a good monitor - you'll be happy with it if you're looking to get into 4k visuals like I am.

    HOWEVER!

The main reason Im buying this is the absolute hassle I went through to make sure my Macbook Air 2020 was showing content on the monitor in 4k @ 60hz.

Given I work from home and speak to clients over zoom, my internet connection is extremely important. So an ethernet cable is necessary for me. Mixing this with the desire for 4k video, i had a problem.

To save you the effort and energy I had to go through, I found the only way for it to work is to buy Apple's own adaptor (allowing you plug a hdmi, ethernet via usb dongle, and charge the laptop) within one dongle.

Once the Apple dongle is plugged in and connected to the monitor, go to 'System Preferences', then 'Displays', click on the monitor, then hold 'options' as you click on 'scaled', then you'll see resolutions appear. Click on the 4k resolution, and then underneath the list, there is a button saying 'low resolutions'.
By clicking on that, you'll be shown the refresh rate, and you can choose 60hz (30hz if you're nasty).
I previously bought that dongle that plugs into both usb-c ports, and had 8 ports on it itself - it was great!

But I soon realised i couldn't both charge the laptop, and display max settings on the monitor, given the one thunderbolt port on the adaptor.

So, invest in the Apple dongle as I've found that that's the only one that works. I promise I'm not an Apple salesman - I actually hate the fact that they've done things like this. There are two dongles, so I'll send the link for the one I bought below:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07XFYZLTJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    Now for the negatives:
    - The holes for screws to mount the monitor are extremely high. So if your arms dont extend that high above your desk, the monitor could sit just above it, or worse, hit it.
    - It's also not VESA mount compatible. So find which mounts actually fit the holes provided. I had to improve with the mount I bought and literally drilled my own holes into them just to make it work.
    - the Menu is a bit finicky - mainly because there's only one button (the same setup as Samsung TVs with that one joystick button thing on the back of the TV).
    - As much as the manual says you can tilt the screen when on its monitor stand provided, mine doesnt...
    - Sometimes the settings for picture quality/colour etc are editable, and sometimes they're not. I'm not sure why, but it might be because something has been turned on/off before. While it could be my fault, they could have made it clearer that IF you change this setting, other settings are unchangeable.
    - There is some darkening of screen depending on which angle you're viewing from.
    - Not relating to the monitor, but Samsungs customer support is TERRIBLE!

I hope this review helps - the culmination of buying over 4 dongles, 3 wires, countless customer support hours and Youtube videos wasted.

This seller excluded the stand for this monitor knowing fully well that it is almost impossible to get the stand separately and even if you do, it is going to set you back at least 100 euros which is the same as getting a brand new monitor. This is very frustrating especially since I haven't been able to reach this seller and the monitor is just laying around useless. This product is also poorly described as I would never have gotten it if I knew I wouldn't be getting with the stand. DO BETTER

5.0 out of 5 stars Quasi perfetto
Reviewed in Italy on 19 July 2022
Size Name: 32 InchStyle Name: CurvedVerified Purchase
