I've fitted it to my old Acer Travelmate 2200 laptop and its as good as new now - probably better (the original drive was only 80 gb). Its set up to dual boot between Windows and Linux and gives me no problems at all. Very easy to install just connect it up and then start installing your operating system. So I would say if your looking to replace your old laptop's hard drive this would be a good one to consider.
This is the perfect choice if you prefer speed and power economy to space.
EDIT: this review applies to the Samsung SpinPoint M80 HM160HC/HM160GC
I have been running Ubuntu Linux for ages (the original XP was outdated and Vista to heavy), so I downloaded the latest Ubuntu, backed up my user files and switched the drive. Ubuntu installed with no problems, and the PC is noticeably faster.
The drive is almost silent in operation, and was very easy to fit. The Dell has a drive caddy with an adaptor header. Swapping the header across between the old drive and new needs to be done with great care while taking suitable precautions against damaging the pins (all too easy to bend them) and against Electrostatic Discharge damage (ESD).
ESD is the quickest way to damage semiconductors, and the hard drive is no exception to this weakness - I repeat, be careful.
Formatting the new drive with the XP SP2 re-install disc was simple, ending up with about 149GB of actual capacity as expected, but it took a while, as did re-installing XP2. Once XP was there again and fully upgraded to latest then W7 was applied as an upgrade to replace it all. All the Dell device drivers needed to be re-installed each time.
All through this palaver, lasting the best part of two days, the Samsung drive just got on with the job, never caused any problems, just did exactly what was required of it, and was recognised correctly by the Dell and two different lots of Windows.
My only regret is not being able to obtain one of the larger capacity 7200rpm Samsung drives in PATA/IDE configuration. At least the laptop should have another few years of useful life thanks to this new drive and a clean install.
I would recommend this drive to anyone looking to upgrade.
Install & format was a doddle & has ample space for my needs, as this is a second laptop for the kids.
It has given it a new lease of life, it now runs much faster than it did originally.
I guess ultimately time will tell how reliable it is, not that I'm worried as it's a Samsung product.
Excellent value for money, so far, I can't fault this drive.
Recently decided that perhaps changing the hard drive would solve it, and as these are now cheap and the laptop only had a 40GB one anyway, it was a good thing to do. Removing the old drive had already been done, it was just a case of fixing the new drive into the casing where the old one was. Once secured with the 4 screws it was slotted back into the laptop and secured with outer case screws.
Initially I was getting pxe error messages when the computer tried to boot, which suggested the drive wasnt properly seated into the internal connector. On further investigation however it was because the DVD drive wasnt the first in the boot sequence list in the Bios. Once this was changed and the recovery DVD that came with the laptop placed in the DVD drive, the system recovery sequence started. Once finished it was then a case of reinstalling drivers that I obtained from the Gateway website for the system hardware and my old laptop was back to life, now with a much bigger hard drive.
In summary a good replacement hard drive for any old compatible laptop.
