Great little DVD player, don't understand the bad reviews over here

I'm very impressed with this little DVD player, I bought it with a Samsung LCD TV.
I compared the quality over scart vs HDMI and there is a very clear difference in quality when plugged into my TV via HDMI, over scart it looks horrible.

Some people have given it bad reviews which confuses me, I'm sure you have not set it up correctly or you haven't bought a decent HDMI cable to go with it.

When plugged into a HD TV make sure that you have set the Quality to 1080 (if your TV supports it).

For £50 get this DVD player until the BluRay HD DVD war is over and the players are at affordable prices.

Good picture quality and will play almost everything however the only thing that lets this item down in the noise when in use. Constant all the way through and if you skip a scene it makes a hell of a racket. HDMI output good and upscales well to HD.

Great upscaling player

Aside from some sound technical issues discussed in other reviews, I must say that I am very pleased with the player which also doubles up as a CD player in my setup.

Firstly, the player is very very simple to use. Hardly any buttons or lights on the player (making it look sleek and sexy) with all remote fucntions easy to operate. It is in essence quite a simple, no-nonsense player, with hardly any added (usually pointles features)

Importantly, the things it is supposed to do it does well. The upscaling feature is brilliant. Image quality from standard (non-HD) DVD's is really quite stunning (i play films on a 44" rear projection TV using an Ixos HDMI cable). It really isn't far off HD quality, expecially if you don't press your face to the screen. If you're sat at a sensible distance away clarity is dazzling and there is a semi-HD quality to it. No doubt this is aided by a decent HDMI cable (cables being as important as the player..only as strong as weakest link etc). COlour, definition and general image quality are impressive. Remember to get the contrast down and brightness up to help reduce noise and improve image quality IMHO.

Thirdly, connectivity is good. There is HDMI, component, digital and coaxial audio out and scart. I run my 5.1 sound through a coaxial digital cable to my Yamaha amp. I've not encountered any real issues, although for Dolby Digital you need to change the audio out setting to Bitsream not PCM.

CD sound quality is also very decent, although the player will sometimes pause momentarilly (although this may have something to do with the Bitsream setting).

All in all a very decent player for a good price. Also extremely light and slim. As also mentioned, it can be easily hacked to play region 1 DVD's.

Recommended.

If only this player was a good as my 5 year old Pioneer DV360S

I felt really let down by Samsung as I was led to believe they were a quality brand as some sites and peoples opinion were calling Samsung the new "Sony" in regards to their products.

Unfortunately if Samsung keep releasing sub par products like this DVD player Samsung maybe in real trouble in regards to quality and reliability.

The Samsung 1080P-7 cannot output digital sound (Dolby Digital or DTS)to a AV receiver/Amp and send stereo signals to a HD or CRT TV at the same time.

First off I find this rather strange as this would mean you would have to stop the DVD player to access the DVD Menu (Playback Setting etc etc) to redirect sound to either or your TV or AMP so the ability to do this on the "fly" is non-existance

Secondly the player is extremely picky on which type of blank DVD's you use to create home movies as it will not play some disks without sound via the HDMI connection coupled with the odd freeze that can only be rectified with the plug being disconnected despite updating the firmware from Samsung's website whilst the Pioneer seems to do everything in it's stride despite the fact it is five years old and not equipped with HDMI!

Lastly the picture quality wasn't that good for an upscaling DVD player that can upscale to 1080P (Before you ask I did set it to 1080P via HDMI as my HDTV can display this)considering I got a very good picture from the Pioneer via Scart with the HDTV on board processor doing the upscaling.

The only plus point is the design of the DVD player but I didn't buy it just for it to be put on the Mantle piece as I bought it to watch films.

All in all the DVD player is not good so much so that I got rid of it and now I'm on the lookout for either a Panasonic, Sony or Pioneer upscale DVD player whilst the Pioneer DV360S is for the moment the main DVD player in my home.

Received yesterday - multi-region hack works

Received this player yesterday and hooked it up last night using an HDMI-HDMI cable. Played Region 2 and the picture quality on my Samsung 1080P LCD was superb. You could see the difference compared to my previous player, which was a good quality player. HDMI definitely an improvement on scart if you can use an HDMI cable.

Then tried the multi-region hack and it worked first time - playing Region 1 to the same quality. Improved quality even on older DVD's.

Hack for this player is the same as for the Samsung M105:

* Press the Repeat button on the remote (not the Repeat A-B)
* Press 5, 7, 5, 3 and 8 in order on the remote
* Number 02 will appear at the top left of the screen
* Quickly press 9 on the remote
* Quickly press the open button on the remote
* At least 15 seconds later power off the player, then power back on.

The player should now be multi-region.

If it isn't repeat the process as any delay pressing either 9 or open can lead to failure, as can not allowing 15 seconds before powering off.

If there's still a problem go to [...] and search for Samsung DVD-M105 to see if there's an alternative hack.

All in all, very happy with what I got for my money, although there are cheaper alternatives such as the Philips 5980.
