This is the first Chromebook I purchased and wanted a Chromebook as my requirements for this device were quite basic and were as follows:
1. Fast Bootup times
2. Access to the internet for browsing
3. Access to webmail
4. Remote desktop connection to a Windows machine
5. Lightweight - Suitable for travel
The Chromebook will meet all these requirements. I just wanted a light weight laptop that I could take with me when I am travelling both in the UK and abroad to allow me to keep in touch with business and personal e-mails.
I didn't want a Windows device that was slow to boot up, really expensive and did everything you could possibly want it to do (when all I wanted it for were the basics).
This device is exceptionally fast and works extremely well. I've had it for almost 18 months now and I would not be without it. If it broke down I would definitely be replacing it with another Chromebook.
Chromebooks now allow you to run Skype (web version) as well as Microsoft Office applications (web version) - all of which are free and work well on the device.
If you understand what you are buying you will be very impressed with this device.
Well, it's lovely! It's just what I expected. It's so small and light. I have used the chrome browser since it came out so I am accustomed to to googles ecosystem and their way of working.
I'm a student teacher. I own a recent Macbook Pro too. But I dread this machine being broken, lost or stolen while I am back and forth at uni, or on my placement. What would be easier to replace? A £1000 laptop or a £220 laptop? I needed something to access my lesson plans, powerpoint presentations etc... and access the internet of course. SkyDrive is good for all the office stuff. But best of all if I keep the lid open on my macbook, I can use Google's remote desktop app and I can take control of my mac while its at home safe, but my computer screen on the Chromebook looks like OS Mountain Lion. It basically looks like a Macbook Air without the excessive price tag.
Don't expect anything super heavy for this computer. Also don't be put off by the wi-fi only use of the machine. Who has a computer these days without internet access? Google docs is more than adequate for basic office needs. But again if you have an outlook or hotmail account you have SkyDrive Web Office Apps for free! Which is Microsoft Office but basic.
Buy one! They're great.
The other good thing about this product is that it doesn't make a sound, the volume is quite good too for listening to music and it features a webcam but I doubt that will be used.
All in all its a good product for people who can't really use computers that much and just want to browse the internet.
However, despite it's low price tag, it truly feels like the almost perfect NOTEbook. It's extremely lightweight with long battery life, and the keyboard/touchpad are both outstanding, and plays in the same league as the Air og high-end windows laptops.
As a second device for surfing/productivity, and for lectures/taking notes, it's simply incredible. If you want the same kind of notebook-feeling(light, long battery life, etc), in a windows/apple package, you're likely to have to pay at least 1000$.
Long battery life.
Exceptionally good keyboard and touchpad.
Instant startup due to the flash-memory.
The arm processor does tend to bend a bit with loading hd-material/heavy multitasking, although the former is rarely a problem, and the latter isn't really something you often do with a chromebook.
Speakers are flat-out horrible.
I haven't mentioned os or storage on purpose, as I assume chrome and cloud to be fundamental for the device. I personally love chrome for a second notebook, and a hdd kind of defeats the main purpose.
Unfortunately I received a faulty item, and had to return it. Amazons customer service was flawless though. Samsung could however use some better QA managers.
If Samsung(or someone else) puts a big.little(more advanced arm processor), slightly better battery and some better speakers in a future model, it would be a truly incredible device. I almost think Samsung is afraid of doing it, as it would be able to last 7-10 years due to the chrome os, and could kill future demand.
