I don't normally write reviews but after a few negative comments regarding this hard drive I decided to say my piece.

I bought this hard drive like many as an upgrade for my diminishing stock drive in the PS4. The drive can packaged in two boxes, one box in another box wrapped in and anti static bag and shock protective cartons. Some people were commenting that this drive has issues in the PS4 however I have encountered none.

Once your data has been backed up which took 7 hours for me on an external FAT32 drive (you still can't use any other file system for the transfer) I installed the drive which fits like a glove and only takes 5 screws to remove under the glossy panel.
With the drive in place you must reinstall the operating system which can be obtained as a 800MB file from Sony's website (the update file simply is not enough you need the full OS). Next start the machine in safe mode by waiting for the second beep from the console and follow steps to reinstall the software. Eventually you'll find yourself back on the home screen where you can follow steps to restore your backed up data (which too a further 3 hours).

With the console back to normal I have found that the drive is quiet, cool, as fast as the original shows 1.77TB of data is what we have to play with (this is the full ammount it gives before the data restoration) and I have encountered none of the HDCP issues or HDMI handshake problems that others claim to have. The handshake issues that may have been present before the 1.70 patch were not solely caused by the drive, I had them caused by my digital sound projector not handling the HDMI handshake correctly.Read more ›

Had a little issue from the start but got there in the end....

For all you guys buying this for your PS4 - Note.... Your looking for a " Perform a New Installation of the System Software " NOT an " Update "
Need:-
1)Computer - to download the software!
2)USB -upload the software to ps4
Within in the USB make a folder called " PS4 " within the " PS4 folder " Create a folder Called " UPDATE " ( All in caps ) Go to the link below and find " Perform a New Installation of the System Software " - you should see a highlited " download now ". Once downloaded the folder should be called " PS4UPDATE.PUP " Drag and drop that into your " UPDATE " folder you created before....

Turn off your PS4 - Plug in your USB and controller, Hold power button till it beeps once! you'll go into " Safe mode " then simply click " Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software "

MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP YOU PS4 DATA!

I had all sorts of problems with this and sent it back. Fortunately the returns system worked well and I had a replacement within a couple of days which worked fine. i give it 5 stars as it is a good specification and price.

In case you are unsure how to install it, it's very easy. Here is some guidance:

In Windows you need to go to computer management (right click in my computer though it may depend on your version), then select storage and then initialise. You will be asked whether you want MRB or the newer GPT. GPT is better for most purposes but you can easily get detailed advice online if you want it (google MRB or GPT). Initialisation takes a second. Then choose quick format or else you will be waiting overnight. That's all there is to it.

(Mine was actually 1.8GB, not quite 2TB)

Here's a tip. Put you old drive in one of these and for less than £10 you have an external backup drive: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Allcam-Portable-External-Enclosure-Laptop/dp/B00GSWT4HY?_encoding=UTF8&tag=anamardoll-20

There are no instructions so I will quickly tell you what to do:

So far, so good. Fast enough for video and big enough too.

All my systems now boot from SSD, so I wouldn't want to use this as boot drive, unless you have a laptop where space is more important to you than speed. As a second drive for space, this makes perfect sense. I'm using this in a compact media server in my home that boots from an SSD, with this drive used for content and it delivers excellent performance, even for HD video.

My only word of caution is about backup. If you gobble up this space with files that don't exist elsewhere, make sure you have another similar sized drive or cloud subscription (amazon for example...) that you can keep a copy on. The bigger the drive, the more pain when it fails....
