This review describes what I did on my laptop.
(NOTE: Before you begin, please check carefully whether the process is different for your system.)

Before buying...
Do you need to pay an extra £28 the full upgrade set?
I could have just bought the basic disc unit, and then purchased an `SSD to USB adaptor' for less than £10,
because...
I only needed the SSD unit and the `SSD to USB adaptor'
The CD contains a `Migration Assistant' for WINDOWS users only.
Mac `Mountain Lion' users can use `Disk Utility'.
I didn't need any other part of the set.

Cloning the internal HDD...
Watch the SAMSUNG upgrade video on `YouTube'...
"Samsung SSD Install - Macintosh Laptop"
[...]

Connect SSD to Mac via adaptor.
Restart Mac and hold `Cmd+R' to enter the `Mountain Lion' `Recovery System' and then run `Disk Utility'.
Use `Restore' as described in the tutorial to clone the existing drive to the new SSD. This automatically creates a `Recovery Partition' on the new drive!

This took 3hrs 20 mins for 186GB.

Replacing the internal HDD with the new SSD...
Do you need a professional to install the drive?
I was quoted £49 by one, and £75 by another.
(NOTE: I have previously tinkered with PC's but never opened a laptop, so I was very cautious about opening my precious laptop. You should be cautious too!
If in doubt get a professional to replace the drive.)

I watched this tutorial on `YouTube'...
"MacBook Pro Upgrade to SSD Solid State Drive (Late 2007 - Early 2008)"...
[...]
(But actually, you don't need to remove the RAM.)

I read this brilliant tutorial on `iFixit.com'...

Having moved my OS to the drive, it's lightening quick and at the LAN partys everyone is like "my god, your in the game wayyyy before everyone",( even before the hex core £3500 machine my mate has). This has even caused on-line accusations of "cheater" as I can get to the other end of the map where the enemy spawn, even before they have spawned in ghost recon (f2p) - its good to be the best (my machine now achieves 7.9 in windows 7 performance tests across the board) it's special!!

However, I have to say that this would probably be the case with any current SSD, and amusing I only did my homework after ordering, I wasn't aware at the time that the drives write speed has been hobbled to better improve read performace... To the degree where most ssd's are much faster at writing than this drive. Now does this effect me to any great degree? Probably not, as I want my drive reading quickly, and that is where this drive excels, but if I could do it again I would probably go for a more rounded drive such as the SanDisk Extreme, while slightly slower at reading info, the write speeds are not hobbled in the same way as this drive, that said you probably won't notice the difference in the real world as its so much quicker than a normal hhd you will be to busy doing backflips to care.

Now the real issue with the ssd package is the software to move over the OS, why? Well as per the other reviews I read here prior to buying, I thought I was much more pc savvy and maybe they were idiots, (having been in the pc game for 20 years) but I must admit that the other reviews were right (not idiots).

Worth the money £244 for 500GB SSD using this drive to store my massive game files from steam it showed up in my bios straight away just needed to format the drive before I could see it on my desk top I booted up Windows 7 O/S install disc got to the format hard drive part then canceled the win 7 install process because already have win 7 O/S on an intel SSD drive.
After formating had 465.7 GB then used Samsung Magician to over provisioning by 10% which is recommended amount by samsung so now only had 419GB storage space left glad I didnt buy the 250gb SSD would filled that the 1st day of use.
Will be buying another 500GB SSD in a few months time probably the 840 series again.

I have a MacBook Pro with an i7 processor. It was quick but I took the plunge and bought this SSD. now my MacBook Pro boots in under 10 seconds, program's such as iMovie run instantly. I also use VMWare fusion and Windows 8. The MacBook runs this with ease and speed. If you want speed to open program's and run memory hungry apps, this is the SSD for you. Great and extremely easy to use. I backed up my original drive to the SSD using a free programme called Super Duper downloaded from the net. I am unsure why others have had problems with their drive but they are unhappy with their drive, I will buy it from them right now! prosco50

I decided to breathe some new life into my 2008 late Macbook unibody 2.4Ghz Intel duo with 256Gb 5400 HDD. After nearly five years of constant use it was starting to struggle with photo editing a little. First upgrade was to move from 4 Mb RAM to 8Mb using a Kingston matched pair of SODIMMs. £49 from Amazon reseller (£69 from Amazon direct). That produced a noticeable lift in performance. I cloned my HDD to the Samsung 840 SSD 500Gb with Carbon Copy Cloner without any trouble and had the drive installed and running in two hours from starting cloning. I also enabled TRIM using the little utility TrimEnabler, (Apple does not enable TRIM on non-Apple supplied SSDs).

No benchmarks yet but this drive flies. Aperture opens in seconds and when loading pictures there is none of that little moment of waiting before the picture comes into full focus. Bootup has been reduced to 40 seconds. Everything is much zippier and has breathed new life into my Macbook which I feel will be good to go for another few years yet.

If any of the terms above are not familiar to you there are many Google links which set out the upgrade process. I would strongly recommend Carbon Copy Cloner for this job. Worked like a dream and has a 30 day fully functional free trial.

The drive also is recognised by the NVIDIA controller on board and operates at the 3Gb link speed and negotiated link speed designed of the disk. Beware some SSD drives do not with link speeds running at 1.5Gb equating to SATA1 speeds, even though your disk is capable for SATA II (3GB) or SATAIII (6GB) speeds

Impressive upgrade highly recommended, but do your homework first and ensure compatibility and that you will get the max benefit for your outlay. In this case based on my own experience this drive is highly recommended for a late 2008 Macbook unibody laptop (model 5.1)
