I can only echo the other reviews here in saying that adding this SSD to my desktop PC has provided the best performance boost I've seen in all my years of PC 'fiddling'. My PC now boots in less than half the time and applications spring to life instantly. I highly recommend reading Khushiman's review of 13th December for some excellent advice on using an SSD (no point in me repeating it). I too have a separate mechanical hard drive for all my applications & data and use my SSD purely for the operating system. Samsung's 'SSD magician' software tool does a good job in helping you configure Windows for SSD use but I also suggest searching for and reading the 'SSD optimisation' guides available on the internet for some additional tips and tweaks to get the best out of the SSD. An excellent buy.

Unlike other people I decided to do a clean install of Windows7 on this and after setting things away I popped out to the kitchen to make a cup of tea... when I came back the first stage of the installation was done and the pc was about to reboot. Incredible.
At the moment I'm only using it for my OS with all of my data being stored on 2 x 500 Gig disks... but I'm mightily impressed with the speed of the disk and will certainly be looking to move over to SSDs when the price drops a bit more into my price range.
For me the main attraction of the Samsung SSD is the fact that everything is made in house so there are less likely to be any compatibility issues...
Don't forget if, like me, you are putting this in a tower system you will need to take into accounting the smaller profile of the 2.5" SSD if you are putting it into a 3.5" HD bay or a 5" DVD bay.
I found both of these usefull:

Akasa 2.5/3.5 inch to 5.25 inch Mounting Adapter

Icy Dock MB990SP-B Dual 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch SATA and IDE SSD/HDD Bracket

I have just spruced up my Samsung R70 laptop which was labouring under Win 7 (32bit) and a multitude of hungry programs. Together with more RAM from Crucial (moved from 1GB to 3GB .. max) and the Samsung SSD installed it positively races. I am delighted as to is the R70 which just lusts for as much processing that it can get. However, a few words of advice about SSDs. Do not defrag (Win 7 recognises an SSD and will not allow the MS on-board defrag to get near it), use CCleaner, which I swear by, carefully and sparingly, and if you have a second HDD drive - using a PC - put all your files, music, photos on it as a data drive. There are other minor matters you should be aware of and the net will provide advice on these and on my previous points if you ask the usual how to questions. Before buying do some research. SSDs do not go on forever and the more work they do the shorter their life. Placing files etc on the second drive (datadrive) will save the SSD much effort and extend its life. The message: get SSD, it is worth every penny and you will be surprised how much faster your laptop/PC becomes. But make sure you research their peculiarities as NAND flash memory based equipment not mechanical magnetic based devices which we are used to.

Everytime I head to the office to start up my ageing core i5 laptop I'm waiting for what feels like ages for windows to boot and apps to load up. Samsung SSD to the rescue, its unbelievably fast and my computer is now as good as a new machine. SSD really is that much better. For less than £100, its a no brainer to upgrade the HDD.

I have the 840 pro on my speed demon desktop machine, but because my laptop is from an older core i5 generation and only SATA2, it simply isn't worth buying the best. The 840, while still top notch, is the poor mans version of the 840 pro but more than enough for a revolutionary laptop upgrade.

Unlike some suggestions, there is no need to do a clean install of windows and apps. A clone is fine. I made a direct HDD to SDD clone with easeUS todo backup. You will need a cable to transfer the OS HDD over to the SSD, then its plain sailing from there. Windows boots so much faster, no more waiting around desktop for the HDD to chug away. Windows is far more responsive and fast. Photoshop and office load up in a couple of seconds.

I'm lucky to have a 2nd HDD bay in my laptop, so the old HDD is used for mass media storage. Best of both worlds :)

The best upgrade you can make to any PC. This improves speed immensely, with both boot time and program load times drastically increased. Buy one now before North Korea invades the South and distribution dries up.

Its a great product, makes a difference for sure. Only snag is you need to buy your own conversion kit/leads if using in a desktop. No biggie, just would have been nice to know at the point of making my purchase.

Thanks!

SSD's continue their march towards higher capacities at lower price points and so have started to move from an enthusiast option to more of an everyday option.

The Samsung 840, although not as fast as their Pro version is one of the best drives out there available to the consumer. It replaces the equally fantastic 830 but now ships in two flavours; standard and pro. The main difference being that the pro offers faster write speeds than the non-pro version and it has tweaked many things under the hood compared to the older 830 models, including a new controller and better wear levelling that should make the drive last longer and stay at top performance.

The drive itself is in a nice matt black with orange fonts and is 7mm thick which makes it suitable the newer laptops that require thinner drives.

I use an ssd for my main os and apps and a mechanical drive for storage of music/docs etc .

Samsung's software suite handles drive cloning; drive wiping; firmware updates the lot. And is very user friendly and easy to use. It even includes benchmarking tools and will optimise your system for ssd use if you didn't previously have one. I.e. turn of defrag etc. Though just re-running the windows experience index will take care of that too. I used the built in clone feature to clone my system from my crucial M4 to the 840 pro and then to this drive. My system is running spot on. For those that don't want to use Samsung's software I highly recommend the free programme 'Macrium Reflect' for cloning.

I have deliberately omitted bench mark results as in reality they can vary between systems (not to mention benchmark software used) and I don't much care of benching, unless you want bragging rights....
