I can only echo the other reviews here in saying that adding this SSD to my desktop PC has provided the best performance boost I've seen in all my years of PC 'fiddling'. My PC now boots in less than half the time and applications spring to life instantly. I highly recommend reading Khushiman's review of 13th December for some excellent advice on using an SSD (no point in me repeating it). I too have a separate mechanical hard drive for all my applications & data and use my SSD purely for the operating system. Samsung's 'SSD magician' software tool does a good job in helping you configure Windows for SSD use but I also suggest searching for and reading the 'SSD optimisation' guides available on the internet for some additional tips and tweaks to get the best out of the SSD. An excellent buy.

Great bit of kit

Unlike other people I decided to do a clean install of Windows7 on this and after setting things away I popped out to the kitchen to make a cup of tea... when I came back the first stage of the installation was done and the pc was about to reboot. Incredible.
At the moment I'm only using it for my OS with all of my data being stored on 2 x 500 Gig disks... but I'm mightily impressed with the speed of the disk and will certainly be looking to move over to SSDs when the price drops a bit more into my price range.
For me the main attraction of the Samsung SSD is the fact that everything is made in house so there are less likely to be any compatibility issues...
Don't forget if, like me, you are putting this in a tower system you will need to take into accounting the smaller profile of the 2.5" SSD if you are putting it into a 3.5" HD bay or a 5" DVD bay.

A new lease of life for my laptop

Everytime I head to the office to start up my ageing core i5 laptop I'm waiting for what feels like ages for windows to boot and apps to load up. Samsung SSD to the rescue, its unbelievably fast and my computer is now as good as a new machine. SSD really is that much better. For less than £100, its a no brainer to upgrade the HDD.

I have the 840 pro on my speed demon desktop machine, but because my laptop is from an older core i5 generation and only SATA2, it simply isn't worth buying the best. The 840, while still top notch, is the poor mans version of the 840 pro but more than enough for a revolutionary laptop upgrade.

Unlike some suggestions, there is no need to do a clean install of windows and apps. A clone is fine. I made a direct HDD to SDD clone with easeUS todo backup. You will need a cable to transfer the OS HDD over to the SSD, then its plain sailing from there. Windows boots so much faster, no more waiting around desktop for the HDD to chug away. Windows is far more responsive and fast. Photoshop and office load up in a couple of seconds.

I'm lucky to have a 2nd HDD bay in my laptop, so the old HDD is used for mass media storage. Best of both worlds :)

Great drive, not so great software.

First the bad: The supplied migration software does what is says, it clones your your HDD and copies to SSD. What it does not do is warn you the write error message is not suggesting there is a fault on the SSD but it should have been initialized and formatted first. As a forty year IT veteran I suspected that was the problem, but I also expected by now a hard drive upgrade might no longer need a trip to the Computer Geek academy. PC's are Consumer electrical goods, I don't see why the average adult still needs to ask a twelve year old for help when better software could do the job for the human. OK, once the SSD is setup and the data copied across. You need to to optimize it with the supplied Magician software and take a trip around the computers bios to change the drive settings to AHCI. If you opt for 'Over Provisioning' (a small reserve partition on the SSD) it also needs to be initialized. The unhelpful Magician software does warn a raw partition may damage your data but neglects to explain in plain English what that actually means. Less experienced users may need the assistance of a twelve year old geek at this point.
Aside from less than helpful software, the SSD itself is very good and I regard it as the single most cost effective upgrade I have made, to any PC, ever. Before the upgrade my Quad-core, Win7 desktop was a slug. Even doubling the RAM made no noticeable difference. Boot time is now 35 seconds from powering on. Opening applications is so fast I could not time them so it must be 1 second. I plan to upgrade my single core PC’s with cheaper 60Gbyte SSD's ASAP.
