Bit dated - this must have been first published at least 25 years ago. Jake is an ex-cop, ex-estate agent turned loafer and part-time detective. Rosie is his carpenter friend and assistant. Together they are looking into the death of a woman who fell/was pushed off her deck. The story putters along in an amiable sort of way, not exactly a thriller, more of a whodunnit led by two rather ineffective investigators. Likeable as Jake and Rosie are, you wouldn't employ them as detectives as they fail to spot the obvious.

Some of the background detail is interesting. This is the San Francisco of Armistead Maupin's 'Tales of the City' , one of the first places in the US to accept same-sex relationships and with a liberal attitude to sex in general. So while the story is often little more than a list of mundane activities: Jake gets up, gets dressed, feeds the cats, etc, his daily routine also includes meeting Rosie at women's bars and quite a lot of casual sex. Things were different in the 80's.

This is a tongue in cheek detective story set in San Francisco, I imagine, in the 80s. Jake is employed to find the victim's killer, a task in which he is aided by his friend, Rosie. The story cruises along at a pleasant pace and is hugely entertaining until the unmasking of the assailant when, as is often the case, the authors solution is stumbled upon aided by coincidence rather than detective abilities. I frequently wish that writers work out the ending of a story and only then write the beginning and the middle! The book is ideal as a time passer but has nothing for a pedantic connoisseur.

A well written book with characters that are easy to identify with and you find yourself wishing them to succeed.
The mystery is difficult to solve and only becomes apparent very near the end of the book.
Well worth reading

A good read. Likeable characters, a decent story, nicely paced and balanced. Jake and Rosie make an entertaing duo. As neaf to twenty words as I can do.

Quite enjoyable holiday type read. A kind of tongue in cheek style and interesting characters. Not an exciting page turner but a relaxing easy read to pass the time. I would read more by this author.

A good first story by Shelley Singer, an ex cop and his gay female neighbor looking into murder , I've read 2 others previously and they are equally as enjoyable
