The simplicity of this tale is deceptive. I like the Ragoon but they are not the central theme. The kids are learning to adjust to mature emotions. Unfortunately life as a teenager is still very straightforward. As we all know life gets really hard when you are in your twenties and forced to become part of the adult community. So to some extent this doesn't tell the whole story of the emotional transition from child to adult. I fear teenagers reading this will think it is possible to get it all sorted out by the time they are 17 and this is not so.

What if we were not free but subjugated to living under the rule of aliens. That is the life of Sam and all the humans of planet earth. I found this story to be a great exploration of how we as humans might survive an alien invasion. Well worth the read, or in my case the listen.
4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth your time! 8 Mar. 2016

This is an enjoyable and very readable book. Its steady pace and subtle tension carries the reader along, and holds your interest from beginning to end. The main character, Sam, is very well developed and easy to root for.

The story takes place in a slightly dystopian future after an alien colonization of the earth has occurred. The author perfectly captures and portrays the impersonal, bureaucratic dehumanization that accompanies occupation; and the thoroughly rational, matter of fact reason given for the occupation was a nice twist! The author's tasteful and thoughtful depiction of how Sam relates to his winnings, while still conveying the difficulty of his situation, was nicely done.

I am not sure if it was written to be young adult fiction or not, but the book could certainly succeed with both adults and young adults alike.
3.0 out of 5 stars Sam's Winnings starts strong lacks finish 8 Mar. 2012

Stan Morris's second novel was slightly disappointing. After a promising start to his latest book. I felt disappointed with how the book ended. "Sam's Winnings" tells the story of Sam and Ashley. Both Sam and Ashley live on Earth with is controlled by the Ragoon. A Lizard lick Alien who has their own set of rules. Its one of these rules which get these kids in trouble. Morris has a great talent of drawing you into his vision. The problem with this story was it was way to short. Morris did a great job of setting everything up but failed to finish. If he could have wrote maybe 25 to 30 more pages about Sam and Ashley I would have been happy. I still would recommend this book to you. Morris is a very good writer still reaching his stride.

this book was a great short read. it took less than 4 hours overall. I simply couldn't put it down. it was sweet and refreshing. there is still plenty of room for development in this story arc. I look forward to seeing more from this author in the future.
