Sampled 2 - Digging Deeper - Various Artists - Double CD
The slinky bass of "Ma Quale Idea" opens this second volume of the Sampled series, instantly recognizable as the driving force behind Madison Avenue's "Don't call me baby". It's easy at first to listen with intrigue, trying to work out who borrowed from who but that soon wears off as the originals come into their own. With more mainstream artists getting in on the act, there is a wealth of original funk, disco and jazz just waiting to see the light of day. There are some unlikely selections, but Engelbert Humperdink crooning "From here to Eternity" in a frenzy of easy listening is accessible thanks to the vision of Kinobe ("Slip Into Something" from the album Soundphiles)
Unlike the previous Sampled, there are more songs which have been covered as opposed to re-cycled, the lazy "Sun is Shining" or Barry White's "Trouble With Me" to name but a few. There are so many artists to discover if you're looking for 1970s rare groove, but aside from dusty records stalls, you won't find many of these treasures anywhere else -- David Trueman
