The greatest champion that never was, he fought everybody everywhere. But the colour of his skin barred him from certain fights. He went from rags to riches and then rages. The damage of the fights took its toll but he was a battler to the end

What a well researched and enjoyable book this is. I did not know that much at all about Langford until reading this book, but it's clear that Sam is one of the most unrecognised greats - and the proof is in the testimony of the fighters who stayed clear of him. Well done Clay Moyle.

This excellently researched and highly detalied book regarding Sam Langford is one of the most important boxing biographies that historians of the sport could own. Many books have been written on the greats of the very early Twentieth Century i.e. James J Jeffries, Jack Johnson and Jack Dempsey, but those books only mention Sam Langford's name almost only as an afterthought. In other word's, justice has never before been done to Sam Langford in full biography form.

Thankfully, Clay Moyle has addressed this in his highly enjoyable and rewarding read of Langford's life. The lists of great fighter's who Sam fought read like a Who's Who of top rank fighters during his time in the ring: Jack Blackburn, Joe Gans, Joe Jeannette, Jack Johnson, 'Fireman' Jim Flynn, Stanley Ketchel, Jack O'Brien, Sam McVea, Harry Wills, Fred Fulton and 'Tiger' Flowers to name but a few.

Sam comes across as intelligent, a man with much humour and despite his life being blighted with missed opportunities because of racial prejudice and the fact that he was so good that some didn't want to fight him, Sam remained remarkedly humble and good-natured throughout his life. It is not an exaggeration to state that had he not suffered from the aforementioned, he could have been a multiple world champion easily.

Included in this book are 98 photographs of high quality - more than I would have reckoned. Also, there are a couple of Foreword's, one written by Sam's great-granddaughter Carol, and another relative named Rosemarie. Sam's fight record is detailed and the book is referenced throughout.

If you love the history of boxing and wish to be educated on a man who should have a much higher profile, then I urge you to read this book.

A truly tremendous work from Clay Moyle. At last the great warrior has received his deserved memorial, highlighting the man, the fighter and the times. Comprehensive research underpins the authority of the biographical detail, augmented by a fine collection of contemporary photos and a fluid eminently readable writing style.

I have read many books about the turn of the century boxing .This book confirms my long held opinion that Sam Langford was the greatest boxer at any weight from middle to heavy. I think Sam would have beaten Stanley Ketchel for the middleweight title but had to take it easy on Stanley in their six round bout but had to take it easy to try to secure a title fight. All the facts and so much more are in this excellent book. A must for all boxing fans.D Payne.

Brilliant book, very well researched to give you an insight into the life of Sam Langford and makes you realise how great a fighter he truly was, just a shame that not many people know who he is. If you're a boxing fan or someone with an interest in sport history then this is a must-read.

A very good read. Author has done their research and written a very good book about a man they obviously admire so perhaps very slightly slanted in his favour but still well worth a read.
