Once again, saitek issued an allen key too small to unscrew the screws on top of the yoke, in order to mount the multi panel. So have your own allen key handy to remove the Yoke screws.
I actually intended on stacking the 3 saitek panels on top of each other. There are several problems with this:
1) combined they are very high, so mounting them on top of the yoke makes it hard to see over (even for a 6' fella like me).
2) if they aren't mounted to the yoke, they will fall over as soon as you press a button - so you'll need to drill some holes in your desk or something to mount them to the desk.
It's also unfortunate that if you mount the 3 panels on top of each other, and you seperately mount the FIPs on top of the yoke (the logical place to mount them), the screw holes on the side of the FIPs will not align with any of the screw holes on the side of the radio/switch/multi panels. If they did, this would be the answer to the stacked panel stability problem - and be quite cool having everything joined together.
I ended up putting my MULTI panel on top of the yoke, the SWITCH panel hanging off the MULTI panel to the left, and the RADIO panel hanging off the MULTI panel to the right. I put the FIPs on top of the MULTI panel. This leaves room for the mouse to hide under the RADIO panel, which is convienient.
Back to the Multi panel though...
The left black control knob is very tight, but not as bad as the Radio panels black knob.
The silver knob is unfortunately on the cheap and nasty side again (a la radio panel).Read more ›
Works ok but often the AP fails to disengage correctly and you have to go to the radio stack on the screen to correct, which defeats the object a little. However, that may be my computer rather then the unit.
I had read so many poor reviews and great reviews, and I tried them for as long as I could, but they conflicted badly on my system. Even the custom downlaodable third party drivers did not fix my issues, though they did improve matters slightly.
After a while I found myself going back to the mouse and flywheel to press buttons and spin dials as it was much easier and faster.
That said, the units are brilliantly built. Solid construction with mounting brackets. If you do purchase them then I really hope you have better luck with them than me. It might just be a subjective thing, but the units did not function as they should on my set up, which was a shame.
It works very well, and has transformed my flying experiences in FSX. No more mucking about trying to use the mouse to fiddle the important things in the autopilot, just turn the knob or press a button, usually both. It's sturdy enough, and I've found that 3 knobs of blue-tac keeps it stuck down fine on my desk, without drilling holes. Without doubt, better money spent (if you're a casual flier, like, me) than rudder pedals. But, of course, more gear we have at home the more fun it is! At the price, I give this 4 stars. It would get 5 if it was made of machined aluminium or even steel or made my desk sag at the end where I have it, but you can't have everything.
And most importantly, it has a big turny trim wheel for elevator trim, which actually works!
Problems I solved:
For windows 10 or 8 I wouldn't recommend installing using the Disks provided, because this was made before the OS came out, but head straight to the Saitek website and download the latest drivers and plugins you need, for myself I play FSX's Steam Edition and there is a plugin for normal FSX and Steam one. also you have to go to FSX settings in General and change the values to US Standard so the readings in the cockpit matches that of this panel.
This panel makes such a difference to a flight, no more distracting mouse work while in the middle of a climb out or descent. My next purchase will be the radio panel. Highly recommended.
