Looking good and playing good
I bought this set top box a few weeks ago. I bought it because I wanted to record and watch HD! I had a couple of hiccups at the start, but after the software update I had no problems whatsoever. And guess what, the picture is absolutely fantastic! Very easy to install and very easy to use. I love the size of hard drive, very impressive. I can record many hours of my favourites programmes! I absolutely love it. Nice, small with a stylish look and very user friendly.

Wanting a digital recorder that could record HD channels, my choice was limited. The reviews for this model were mixed but I took a chance. The product did everything claimed although the program guide was not easy to use. Its main problem was reliability/build quality. It froze 3 times in quick succession and also lost its recording schedule. On discovering that one button on the remote was already giving cause for concern, it went back. Thank goodness I bought from Amazon as they were excellent, as usual.
I was unable to find an alternative which could do what this should have done, without some major drawback. In the end, I gave up on HD recording, and went for a Humax PVR9300T 320GB Twin Tuner, PVR. The difference in build quality and software design could not be more obvious.

Looks like I'm the only 5 star awarder... 500GB? I'll never need that much? oh yes I will. Yes it's slow to boot, but don't forget it IS a computer and computers do take a while to sort themselves out, my PC takes longer to wake up. It's not a vhs mechanical machine! We live in a wonderful age and start to take gadgets like this as common place, it's incredible what it can do, some people expect everything to work at super sonic speed, well this does ok once it's up and running. Compared to setting the old VHS to record this is marvellous, surely it can't get better than this? press the red button and it's done, what could be easier? simple set up combined with simple operation. Only had it a few days and already have recored 6 films and goodness knows what. This will change the way you view your programmes. I normally go to bed early and miss all the good stuff, not anymore! I'm well happy

I bought this after reading mixed reviews for this and the 320 Gb version. The consensus seemed to be that having the latest firmware update made a big difference so I went ahead and proceeded with my purchase - big mistake! Firstly, the product is extremely cheaply made, it literally feels about the same weight as an empty cereal box. The remote is tacky, with a kind of rubberised directional pad and poor button layout. Appearance wise, it actually looks OK, until you realise that there is a bright red LED that takes every opportunity to flash angrily and also the digital display can't show all letters properly and can only display four at a time, making it virtually illegible and useless e.g. GUIDE appears as 'G U l 6' and INITIALISING shows as 'l n 1 t".
Then you turn it on, and wait, and wait and wait and 40s later (I timed it) you get a picture. Updating the firmware is easy if you have moderate computer knowledge and soon I was running V2.5.1 - the latest and greatest (not!). Other than it takes 15s to change a channel (via the EPG), the EPG is slow and frustrating, changing channel involves the screen turning black, then blue and finally going back to the guide, at which point you have to press the guide button again to actually show the channel full screen. The menu is poorly laid out, some programmes didn't record and for those that did there is regular visual and sound drop-outs. Navigating menus in particular is terrible with the screen often flashing to black then blue before going to the menu again, the whole experience is buggy and time consuming. I had a Goodmans Freeview recorder (not HD) that I bought for £100 3 yrs ago, which I am only replacing as it died, which was virutally instantaneous in everything it did. This Sagemcom is a very poor quality product which I will be sending back. I bought it because it looked OK, was cheaper than other products and the reviews were mixed giving me hope it might be OK - it wasn't (although I should say picture quality seemed impressive). Don't waste your time with this product!

(Oh and this is my first Amazon review, I felt compelled to write it after such a crappy product experience, hope you find it useful)

Good things about this product. Small and the box looks ok. Both the box and control feel a bit cheap and fragile. Picture and sound not bad. However now the bad side. The electronic program guide continually locks up as do the other menus, the box requires a reboot to resolve. The box takes ages to fire up. What I really cannot forgive for a not insignificant amount of money is the fact the clock runs 15 minutes slow a day!!! Ok when you take the box off standby it updates the time but if you don't turn the box on the clock is way out. I can buy a £5 digital watch that will keep perfect time. This product really feels like the first attempt by a bunch of amateurs.
