Product Description

The Barista Express: with Conical Burr Grinder and Dose Control

"Almost every ingredient tastes better when it's fresh and coffee is no exception."

The natural oils that give espressos and cappuccinos their rich, creamy flavours start to quickly degrade as soon as the bean is ground. This product not only grinds it fresh straight into the filter for you, it delivers the right amount of coffee too, all at the push of a button.

There are 18 grind settings from course to fine for optimal espresso extraction as well as instant hot water for making long black coffees and pre-heating cups.

Heston's Tip: Check the 'roasted on' date on the bag and if it doesn't have one don't buy it as it's almost certainly not fresh (your best chance is at your local café,– the one with the queue out the door).

Try to buy one small bag at a time so that you can use it all within a few weeks. You won't believe how much difference freshly roasted beans make.

A barista will quickly tell you that the most important ingredient to deliver an amazing espresso is to use fresh beans and to grind them as close to the time of use as possible. Actually, it's best to limit the time between grinding and extraction to seconds, not minutes. That's why Sage have built a grinder into the Barista Express espresso machine.

The in-built conical burr grinder allows you to grind only what you need directly into the portafilter. It's fully adjustable in grind size and dose, so you can tweak to taste. The patented Razor dosing tool trims the puck for consistent extraction, while PID digital temperature control delivers accurate water temperature throughout the extraction.

With a dedicated hot water outlet, impressive steam pressure and dual and single wall filters, you'll move from novice to barista in no time at all.

Sage believe that the only way to design the most innovative and useful kitchen appliances is to understand the food that they help you prepare. What better way to innovate and develop, than to collaborate with one of the world's most celebrated food thinkers - Heston Blumenthal.

Wow, I am impressed! I've always searched the market for an espresso machine that would look and perform like a commercial one and unfortunately I never came across one and so I ended up buying several DeLonghi machines over the last 15 years.

This is a Breville BES870XL, it's sold in the UK under the brand name Sage and I assume it's a new product to the UK (I might be wrong but I never saw Breville espresso machines before on Amazon UK). To make it short as soon as I saw this machine (after checking several positive reviews) I had to buy it.

The Barista Espresso is well built, solid, elegant, looks like a commercial machine, sounds like one and it makes really good coffee...milk too comes out perfectly! This machine is a world apart from anything I've used so far.
It's not easy to use, I'm still working hard to get the right shot every time, right in the middle of the recommended extraction zone, every shot varies depending on grind size, tamper pressure and coffee type, but the machine gives lots of feedback so whenever I get the right balance coffees and cappuccinos taste extremely good...I trust that with time it'll get a lot easier, for now I don't mind having to experiment with the Barista.

The Barista is fully configurable: grind size, grind amount (automatic or manual), coffee shot volume, H2O temperature, manual or automatic shot, hot water dispenser, commercial 360 steam wand, pressure dispersion between steam and shot operation, pre-infusion, pressure gauge, automatic stand-by........every function is thought with every-day use in mind!

The machine makes excellent coffee, but after 15 months the grinder stopped grinding properly.
Rang Sage Customer Services and asked about a new top burr, the machine was under their 2 year guarantee.
They denied it could be the burr. They refused to supply me with one by post saying only an engineer could replace the burr anyway.
This is clearly incorrect ... see page 26 of the Barista Express manual ... it has a handle/clip to enable the owner to take it out and clean it.
3 weeks later an engineer came from the south-midlands up to Northumberland and confirmed the burr was worn and replaced it.
Apparently the burr costs less than £20.
Beware ... Sage Customer Services are very, very frustrating.
Pity, it seems like a good machine.

People of Great Britain, this is a great espresso machine at an amazing price! Set aside your opinion of Heston Blumenthal, positive or negative, because he did not design or manufacture this machine. The credit goes to engineers and designers in Australia and factory managers in China.

Sage is made by Breville Australia. Breville in Europe is a different company from the Breville based in Australia. These machines are identical except for the voltage and name plate to those sold by Breville (US, Canada, Australia, etc), Gastroback (DE), Catler (CZ, SK) and Bar & Riviera (F) In particular, this is the equivalent of the BES870XL model, with only a different voltage/plug as well as VAT (hence the much higher price).

Note that the slightly different older model had a square bean hopper, no PID temperature control, no water spout.

Compare feature for feature and you will discover that no other machine comes close. Where else can you find PID temperature control, timed grinding, timed shots, automated cleaning, a pressure gauge?

Is it reliable? This is my third machine from the same origin. I am now living in Italy and left the other two back in the US, both working perfectly, because of the voltage mismatch. No one sells these machines in Italy. I chose this machine over something local, with local service.

Italy is the birthplace of espresso and the availability everywhere means that home espresso is not well developed. The Italian machines are either sturdy and primitive in comparison or flimsy and deliver poor results. Before my Dual Boiler and my Barista Express in the US I had a Rancilio Silvia for ten years. Sturdy indeed, but very difficult to control temperature, and very slow to warm up.

I've been using this now for almost three months.

I will get my hatred for Heston out of the way immediately. This is a Breville BES870XL that's been sold in North America for some time. Obviously the marketeers decided that the name "Breville" (famed for their sandwich toasters in the 1980s) and products costing over £500 might pose a bit of a branding problem, so decided to rename Breville to "Sage" and pull in a F grade celebrity endorsement to create an air of exclusivity.

It pleases me to know that Heston had nothing to do with the creation of this product (I'll stop now :) ). I came across it on various US coffee forums and some excellent reviews on youtube like this one from Seattle Coffee Gear so set about looking for one in the UK.

[...]

I was looking for an alternative to a Gaggia Classic and separate grinder which was what I was going to buy. This seemed to fit the bill in terms of the degree of manual control and the consistency of the end product. The fact it looks quite nice is a bonus. It's also "reasuringly heavy", but still light enough to move around your worktop.

What's great:
The coffee. To my beginners palette it makes a great espresso.
The fact it comes with high and low pressure baskets
The drip tray "clean me" popup is a nice feature
It comes with a lot of useful accessories - though the coffee dose measurer quickly gets bypassed when you become more experienced.
The removable water container makes filling and re-filling very straight forward.
The pressure gauge becomes a point of fanaticism. Once you get the brew you like, making sure you hit the same spot time after time becomes an obsession for the extraction process.
